Quick update if anyone cares

We tore into the trans on Sunday looking for any funky signs that might not have been noticed during previous teardowns, since there is less than here is what we found. The kick down band was wore pretty bad, the reverse drum and support were shot, the area where the support slides into the drum was marred and gouged pretty bad, the pressed in bushing for the Overdrive hub was in pretty bad shape, and of the many seals, we found one bad one that looked to almost be the wrong size, I can't remember what one it was but it was in the rear section of the trans. It was a shaft seal that would not even touch the shaft, the ID of the seal was to large to make contact?!?! when it was pulled it seemed stiff, thus making it seem like and old seal

I'll keep posting with info.

From your teardown report... don't blame you!
Unfortunately, local shops can try hard but usually just don't seem to understand what's needed for high HP CTD's.

Go to one of he big three or four installers...this time?

I think I am almost there!!

Well, I finished the trans install Sat afternoon, the job really is not to bad, (if you have a trans jack that will raise tall enough), unfortunatley I use a motorcycle jack that was about 8-10 inches to short, so I had to take the truck all the way off of the jack stands to get it low enough!! The truck sits alot taller than my Z71 did, Anyway, The truck seemd to shift fine, even around 45-50 mph, I could let off the gas, then go back in it and the trans would grab immediatley and go, BOY that felt good, I drove it two or three miles and pulled over to check trans fluid again, JIK, all looked good, after I made an interstate burn for about three miles, (everything was still good). Taking off from the stop sign on the exit ramp It seemed to shift funny going into second gear like it was doing a little searching, then take a long time to shift into third, I am going to try adjusting the kickdown cable.

Here is a question, is there a proper way to drive this thing after a complete re-build, and is there a process of "properly" re-teaching the computer. I was told to break it in similar to a new engine.

J, I used a friend of mine that is getting bombed with these trannys at his day job, I feel confident he knows what he is doing and will be honest with me, (that means more than money sometimes) if ya know what I am saying, plus, he let me hang out and help for the teardown and re-build, It was my only option since I had to take a summer class and tuition is comming up for fall semester.

After complete rebuild...DTT recommends no harsh WOT for 500 miles, I believe, to give the new clutches, etc. a change to wear in a bit.
Change fluid and filter after first 1,000 miles to remove clutch 'fuzz' from the system. Then should be good to go.

Not so good update

Alright, after about 50 or so miles it started acting up again, man I could have driven it off of a cliff!!!!, , so to just eliminate anything that has to do with the trans, I bought a new valvebody, installed the required shift kit, and just finished installing the VB, now my OD off light is on, and the trans temp light is on, any ideas, my thoughts were that when the original VB was gone through and checked, a valve or sticky chk ball or something may have been un-stuck, I want to think that if it worked almost perfect, other than the one 1st to 2ed shift, (only did it the one time) for as long as it did, that would rule out any electric prob from noise or voltage dist. so I went with a new VB. Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks Guys

VB was pulled tonight and the harness, temp sensor, gov pressure sol. and gov. pres sen. were swapped out with the ones that were on the original VB, I don't know what the diff was other than I was not getting any reading at all from the tranny temp sensor, (yes the harness was pluged in.) All seems to be fine, for now at least, I have to be up at 3:30am so no further testing will be done tonight, I have some Hwy miles to put on tomorow so I might take it.

There is some difference in the years, I know some of the members here have been thru it.

I think they added a resistor to get everything back in tune......Can someone with the specifics chime in here?

Everything seems to be fine now, I think the VB was the major issue, I drove it about 250 miles Monday and it shifted fine, today I am going to haul a small tractor and bushhog just to feel a little more confident before I put the big skidder behind it again.

Gov Pressure Sen. readings?

Now this is getting to be a pain in the ! I have put about 550 miles since monday, never got a chance to tow anything, (i guess that was a good thing) and everything was working great, UNTIL my drive home tonight, the truck started to shudder on the interstate at around 70-75 mph, I let off, exited the interstate and pulled over to check the fluid level, it was good, took off fine down the backroads shiftin like it is supposed to through third, then just as slow as grandma, it went into OD, but never "hit" it, with the slightest touch of the accl. it slipped, I hit the "OD off" butten for the rest of the drive home, then the first stop sign I came to it started off in second, I manually shifted into first, shifted into drive, then the first to second search started,

Tonight we put the monitor on it, the gov pressure seemed normal up to 35 mph, meaning it matched the monitor's recomended pressure(s), then at about 37-38 mph, the "recomended" pressure jumped to @130, and the actual reading was at @83, it didnt matter how hard I was on the gas, it stayed @83, Does anyone know what I am supposed to be seeing from this reading??

Also, the Monitor shows what gear the trans is in, during the OD slip, it shows 4th gear, but the 3/4 sol. showed 3rd gear, what does this mean?
