Another auto tranny upgrade question

Ok guys I am ready to do some tranny upgrades my trans works perfectly but I want the better converter I called ATS they say I can add their torque converter and valve body and the rest of the tranny will be fine with the little horsepower I have added then I called DTT and they tell me that my tranny will not hold together with just a tc and vb then I called suncoast and they told me that with just doing the converter and valve body the rest of the tranny will hold together. What is your thoughts I would like to hear from owners with first hand experiance not just opinions My trans fluid looks just like it was poured from the bottle and the pan is clean every time I change it I will not be towing a whole lot just a 29 foot fifthwheel that might weigh 9000#'s.

Re:Another auto tranny upgrade question

Just went through this, got my truck done today. Mine is an 02 but the principles still apply. Truck has 14,000 so original trans was in virgin condition. If you are going to the expense of a TC and valve body with the trans down and apart, why not go the extra mile and do the upgrade kit (clutches, seals, springs, etc.)? If you are paying someone to install its not that much more labor. I had the priviledge of watching mine being done by one of the best and there is a lot to doing them right. If you get it done wait until you drive it,you'll be glad you did. Bite the bullet!
Tim
By the way mine is all DTT, I'm very pleased

Re:Another auto tranny upgrade question

In my opinion I would do the complete transmission. There are a lot of places that the tranny can leak internally and by upgrading all the internals you should alleviate that concern. Also as tlea said the labor cost for doing all of it is not that much more than just a VB and TC.....

Doug

Tlea If you don't mind me asking what did the complete tranny cost you? Where did you have it done was it by dtt or one of their dealers?

Re:Another auto tranny upgrade question

I had just the ATS TC and VB for 40,000 abusive miles. The stock clutches did fine until the 400hp mark. Tranny had 80,000 stop and go traffic miles on it. I now have everything but billet shafts. I will wait until a shaft breaks to upgrade to billet.

Stakeman How much horse power did you put through your stock clutches before you went over board? How many miles were on your tranny when you did the tc and vb ? Matt

I know someone who's running just a TC and VB from Suncoast and is running 13 sec. daily driven without any trouble.

Re:Another auto tranny upgrade question

The truck put down 388hp at that time. The TC and VB was replaced at 42,000 miles. After 400hp is when the tranny didn't feel as solid. I was able to slip the stock tranny with just an EZ box.

There was a big change when the rest of the tranny was upgraded. ;D

Re:Another auto tranny upgrade question

Cumminsgetsome,
At 46,000 mi I got a TC & VB upgrade. I pull a light, 19 ft. TT. The ONLY Bombing I've done is an Edge EZ. At 76,000 miles I am wishing I had done the entire tranny. With only 30,000 miles on the TC & VB I'm having some problems, plus I got the tranny oil hot just bucking a headwind with the TT. When the tranny gets bad enough (won't be long) I'll make an appointment with DTT and have it done end to end.

So, IMHO, it is better to get a DTT complete job, even if you have to use some plastic. I'm virtually paying for mine twice, just because I wanted to save a few bucks in the beginning.

Do it right the first time - it pays.

Stan
