Injector life questions.
Injector life questions.
My '98.5 has just over 300K miles on it now. I get a small miss after the truck warms up and during hard acceleration is not completely smooth from the mid 1000 rpm range.
I have a few questions about injectors.
1. Generally speaking, what is the life expectancy in miles of stock injectors ? ( I have no idea how many hours I have on this motor.)
2. What are the signs of injectors getting weak ?
3. If I buy a new set should I go back with stock injectors keeping in mind that my truck is not really hot rodded ?
4. Any specific recommendations for a particular injector to get, the most bang for the buck ?
I have a 60 HP Edge EZ, and the items listed below.
Thanks in advance for the info and opinions.

I can't really answer the life expectancy question, but I would also recommend the RV275 injectors. Pensacola diesel sells them at a pretty good price. I think they're cheaper than stock injectors...
Well , you guys have me eyeballing some RV275s. Thanks for the tip.
As far as the rest of the questions does anyone have an opinion ?
I guess my symptoms could indicate that my injectors are past their prime ?

I remember seeing on here a long long time ago that the RV275's didn't have the ideal spray pattern for the pick up version of the 5.9 ISB. It was said that the bowls of the pistons were different. I don't know if it's true or not. I ran them for a while and my brother and dad are currently using them.
Found the answer here https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...9&postcount=28 about what engine, but nothing on spray pattern. I did a search for RV275 injectors and got threads back to 2003 or so, they have been used alot.

Thanks a bunch all for the info.
Are any of you running the RV275's or the FBD 50's with a 'similar' set up as mine ? What did they do for performance ?
I think its time to tool up a bit on my truck. Injectors and a new FASS lift pump aught to spark some added life into the 'ol girl. It runs pretty good for 300k but it is time to give her some luvin'.

I have read that people like the rv275 for towing and that when combined w/an Edge or Quad the overall performance of the truck is great for towing w/out pushing the ctd to extremes. I believe it's safe to say that regardless gas or diesel after 300k miles your going to have build up and or less than "new" performance on the injector tips.
I have RV275's and an Edge EZ. These two are an excellent combination for a much better towing truck. I would not be afraid to recommend that combination to anyone. Bear in mind the condition of the clutch if you have a manual or transmission if an automatic.
I have had mine in around 175,000 miles and still going strong. I am at the stage of looking for something to improve fuel economy and not lose the power I am used too. I am eyeing the Formula Mach 1 or 1.6. Most reports rate these injectors very highly because of superior spray pattern. I am sure there are those that have had experience with both that can give better opinions. Formula injectors are not cheap but when you look at the cost vs better fuel economy than things even out.
One more thing to think about.

Thanks for all the input I am leaning towards the RVs but SWC brings up a good thought.
What has using RV275s done for your fuel economy. Better, worse, same ?
I do have to calculate that into the equation as I do pile the miles on this truck.

When I got the EZ there was "supposed" to be a mileage increase. Same think with the RV275's. I saw no change in mileage before or after. Just a bigger grin on my face when I feel the additional power available at work.
My truck is heavy with a deck and not streamlined as I have tool boxes under the deck.
Maybe the idea of F1's and better mileage is another pipe dream.

Under some conditions I found better fuel economy with the EZ.
Im thinking that from what I hear, the RVs are a good choice.
After the next lift pump starts going south I will also step up to a FASS . Between that, the EZ and some 275s I will have a pretty good set up for what I need. I dont need a dragster ; )
Hey, Thanks to all for the great info ! I love this place !

Why not just go to your local Bosch diesel shop and have the old ones rebuilt to your tastes? It can be done. Better yet, if your heart is set on the RV 275's why don't you give Midwest Fuel Injection a call? Here's their webpage: www.mwfi.com I bought a VP44 and my FASS HPFP from them a few years ago. Very courteous and knowledgeable (I SURE HOPE SO!) people.
My buddy got a miss at 350,000 miles and kept driving it. Now the motor is on the shop floor with a hole in the piston from a bad injector. I like the rv275 injectors, but either way, would get the injectors replaced ASAP.
