Angry high egts

my trucks egts have been running higher that normal. normaly it runs 500 to 650 post turbo maybe 750 getting up to speed on the highway, 600 to 650 at 70mph up small grade. now it will grt up to 900 just driving around town like a sane person. i was watching them today while i was gettin on it comp box on 3 on 2 and it was up to 1250 in about 15sec. it still builds 37 pounds of boost but it seams like theres alittle more turbo lag then normal too.

any ideas?

i looked around and didnt see any boots blown off partially. i hoop is not my turbo taking a Sh**.

well I was gonna say a boost boot but your numbers are good and it sounds like you checked that. I would look at the air filter & intercooler, are either plugged? I hope so cause the only other thing that I can think of would be in the vp44 not giving you timing advance......you don't want that.

My truck is doing about the same thing. It will boost to +35psi, but will come down to almost nothing. Maybe 3 psi at 60 mph. (was 7-10 psi before) No leaks. The timing advance from the VP44, is that electronics? Or could it be the gear has slipped on the VP44?

Bstitt
I will be going through mine next week, if I come across a fix I'll let you know. Our problems seem to be same

Have you looked around the exhaust manifold? If you have no leaks on the cool side it might be on the cold side. If you looseing drive energy (not necesarily drive pressure) you could get that.

007 if your boost falls off once you get to constan speed, that is normal, think of the turbo as load sensing as load falls so does boost,

newriver, I kinda thought along those lines also but the fact that he is getting so much boost kinda pulls me away.....maybe

High country,
I understand where your coming from, but my pressures used to stay constant above 7psi while traveling 60-65 mph. Now it drops down significantly

High country,

Yes the EGTs do go up, just like bstitt's temperatures. They go up quick and high if you get on it a little

007did your temps used to be lower at that boost level? I am curious if you might be just a bit over what the hy can keep cool, they like a bit less pressure. other things might be, plugged inter cooler from the puke bottle, a plugged air filter, and lack of timing.

When I replaced my resonator and muff with a straight pipe, it lowered my EGT's significantly. In fact, with the fiver on, I can't get it out of the green under any conditions. If you have a partially plugged exhaust system, it seems you are going to have higher EGT's, along with normal boost values.

You got me there, but if you don't get any responses on this thread, you might re-post it specifically asking about clogged intercoolers...you also might do a search on the forum. Could be someone else has had something similar happen.

the intercoolers clog from the breather bottle spewing oil onto them. you only need to look through it, shine a light from the inside and you'll see what I mean. I used carb cleaner on mine, a pressure washer will flatten the cooling fins so don't use anything really high pressure, garden hose would be ok. I don't know how much drop you are going to see if you clean the cooler, not the 500* you are seeing, but it could be a contributing factor.
