Hard start....new symptom...

I just found out that if I park my truck facing down a slope it will crank fine, but if parked facing up a hill it requires me to bump the starter. It doesn't matter if the truck is hot or cold it works either way. What is causing fuel to leak back out of the VP44? Or is that not whats happening?

I am having the exact same problem. I installed a FASS 150 on my truck a couple weeks ago and have had hard start issues since. The way my driveway is sloped the front of my truck is generally a little higher than the back when parked over night. The night before last I backed in because I had a trailer hooked up and the next morning it started fine. Last night I backed in to try it again and sure enough it started up fine this morning.

With issues like this....some diagnoising with clear hose comes in handy...will let you know where the air is coming from....Return side, or Pressure side...then you go back from there.....its not fun...but its effective.....we do agree that the stock sending units leave a lot to be desired in some cases.....

Thanks guys. I'm clueless as to whats going on with this thing. Also I've read tons of hard start posts and now my eyes are killin me.

Where this check valve at? Could it be stuck?

Also I've got a the draw straw in the mail and come to think of it it should be here tomorrow.

Well I got the Draw straw in the mail the other day, but now I'm waiting on a fitting. I'll install it hopefully this week and if that doesn't solve the problem and I'm 85% sure it's not, then it's going to the dealer to get diagnosed. I'm just TIRED this crap.

The "check valve" is on the return line coming out of the VP-44. Its the fitting that is the larger of the two that looks to have a ball bearing pressed into the top of it. I still would suggest using some clear hoses to do some testing. THis will let you see your hard start issue and let you know which line to start back checking.

Does that Holley use copper washers to seal at the connection? I would definatly check there...i had a filter head at John Deere do this to me once....it was a washer.....

I'll look at the valve tomorrow, but if it's broke or messed up how will I know?

And as far as clear hose, where could I pick some up? Lowes?

I did notice this a while back that when I unhooked the hose from the VP to the Fuel filter canister that no fuel came out. I just unhooked it from my Vulcan fitting and then reinstalled it. Shouldn't some fuel have leaked out???But when I unhooked the fuel line at the fuel canister that goes from the canister to the holley fuel leaked out.

Thanks for your help!

It dont take bunch of air to air lock an IP. The leak i delt with at JD was on the suction side of the pump. NEver leaked one bit. BUT with a clear hose i could see the air bubbles being sucked in. AND i also installed one of thoes clear JD filters that you can see the air....it was just building up at the top of the filter...and once the tractor was shut down, the air quickly made its way up to the IP. Mind you the filter was still full of fuel. Then the tractor would run for about 4 seconds and then quickly die......haveing to crack lines to get it restarted.......got real old. Found a faulty copper washer and a pipe fitting that didnt have sealant on it via the clear tube. NO signes of fuel leaking.....only sucking air....it was a weird one...but this might help you.....my point....dont rule ANYTHING out!

Tubeing can be had any pretty much any hardware store i would think.....

For the VP valve.....its not hard to find one....i would just replace it. Call someone that deales with these pumps....II, Blue Chips, Midwest Fuel Injection.......and see if they have one they dont want or can sell....dont reckon they are too $$$.........

10-4. I'll pick up some clear hose tomorrow. So I shouldn't see any air in my fuel lines correct? Also I need to just watch for bubbles and if I do I need to track them down?

Sounds simply enough if I understood everything correctly.

Thanks a TON! Now we'll just see what happens.

Good Luck!

Keep us posted on the draw straw! My fuel gauge is hanging up and I'm thinking of doing the 'Straw' when I get into the tank to look at the float, etc.
