I HAVE THE 3:55 GEARS WITH 33 INCH TIRES. I OCCASIONALY PULL A 10,000 LB BOAT WITH A LOT OF DRAG. WOULD I BENEFIT BY CHANGING MY GEARS TO THE 3:73'S. WHEN JUST RIDING I WOULD THINK IT MAY IMPROVE FUEL MILEAGE WITH THE LARGER TIRES. I KNOW A 4:10 SWAP WOULD REALLY HELP ON THE PULLING, BUT I FIGURED I WOULD BE SAFER WITH THE 3:73'S SINCE I DIDN'T PLAN ON CHANGING THE FRONT ANY TIME SOON. ANY HELP? THANKS!! ALSO, IF I PUT A 3500 WHEEL CYLINDER IN THE REARS, WOULD IT IMPROVE THE REAR BRAKING ANY?

 

The tall tires are taking away from your final drive, as you prolly know already so if you are going to change gears I would go with the 4.10 gears for towing and all round. You use a little more fuel and run a little higher rpm., but it's just money I see by your sig that you aren't afraid to spend a little so the fuel mpg is only a couple less per tank. you will also be a little faster everywhere except top end.

BTW would you please quit yelling at me. ( all caps)

 

If you have a 4 wheel drive and plan on using it, you have to change gears in both differentials.
Otherwise you'll break a lot of expensive parts.

Going to 4.10 would help with the bigger tires, it would put the ratio back closer to what stock was with the stock sized tires.

I don't think changing the rear cylinders would help much in braking, as the fronts do most of the braking power.

REALLY, HOW CAN ALL CAPS BE ANY HARDER TO READ THAN all lower case?lolololol. OK, I KNOW THAT I WOULD NEED TO SWAP BOTH FRONT & REAR GEARS, THOUGH I HAVE RUN THEM MIXED MANY TIMES THROUGH THE YEARS. AS A PROFESSIONAL MUD-RACER,AT ONE TIME, WE ALWAYS SET THE FRONT RATIO'S UP FASTER. JUST DON'T DO IT ON THE HARD TOP. I THINK I WILL GO WITH THE 4.10'S. THAT WILL BE THE BEST SET-UP FOR ME. I FOUND A COUPLE OF 2002 REAR SPICER 70'S WITH 4:10'S THAT I AM GOING TO LOOK AT PURCHASING ONE TO GET THE REAR DISC BRAKES. WHAT YOU GUYS THINK? ARE THE DISCS ON THE 02' FRONTS ANY BETTER THAN THE 99'S? IF SO I WILL JUST SWAP THE WHOLE FRONT & BACK,ALONG WITH THE MASTER CYLINDER, PROPORTIONING VALVE,ETC. DOES THAT SOUND LIKE WHAT IT WILL TAKE? DO YOU THINK I WILL CREATE ANY ENGINE LIGHTS OR ECM PROBLEMS? THANKS FOR YOU FELLOWS HELP & I AIN'T YELLIN', JUST BLIND!

 

A '99 4wd already has the same rear wheel cylinders as the 3500. In a later year they went to the same brake width also, but yours are one inch narrower.

I'm not sure if changing the fronts out will help, but I could be wrong--adding discs to the back will help though---

I do believe you can change out the 99 rear cylinders to the one ton--I was told this would be smart when I did it two years ago, so you need to verify that again as Haulin Dixie states otherwise--he may be right, but I was told different by Sam Peterson--of course my truck had the Dana 70 back then and that could be the reason it was doable for me---

I don't think you can get 3.73 gears--I couldn't 4 years ago it was 4.10s, but again time changes things so you may want to double check as they may be available now--chris

 

I HAVE THE DANA 70 TOO. I AM PROBABLY JUST GONNA GO TO NAPA & SEE IF THE PART NUMBERS FRO THE WHEEL CYLINDERS ARE THE SAME OR DIFFERENT FOR THE 3500'S COMPARED TO THE 2500'S. IF DIFFERENT THAT IS WHAT I WILL TRY FOR NOW. AN AXLE SWAP IS COSTLY. THANKS !
