Fried ECM?? Dealer said first he has seen. Is this common?
Truck: 2002 CTD HO, 6-speed, 4x4, with an Edge EZ and Air Dog.
Yesterday, while driving my son to school my truck started bucking and then would do nothing other than idle--would not build power. Towed to dealer and they say the ECM is fried, likely by a broken alternator that was over-charging. The mechanic working on the truck, who is a friend, said it is the first bad ECM he has seen on a CTD. I am looking at a new ECM and alternator.
My question is if this is common and could the EZ module have anything to do with it? I searched the forums and did not see anything regarding this.
Thanks for your help.

My ECM went T U in MT August 08. Engine light came on and sputtered to a stop. It started up and ran for about 1/2 mile and quit for good. Towed back to Kalispell and it started and ran but had no power. Diagnosis= ECM failed.
One other thing, when I started it that morning it missed twice. It had never done that before. The codes were all ECM related and a lp code was in there also. That got replaced after 1 month.

Duh, can you tell I am worried about forking out $1500 for a VP44? Sorry about that.
I am going to call Edge today to see if they think the EZ module could have done any of this. In the meantime, can anyone explain how the EZ module could wipe out an ECM? I forget the terminology, but I did not "tap" any wires, the EZ module just plugs in between some wire harness on the driver's side.

Dunno if the edge takes out the ECM, but I have seen several guys here who had no starts, simply remove the edge and the problem went away.
Before I put an ECM in I would at least remove the edge and try to start her.

You are talking about some expensive parts. I'd want to understand what test results and logic indicate the need. Also would want a guarantee that those are correct - ie: no fixie, no pay. Many shops want to be paid for part installation even if it doesn't correct problem. You can install the wrong parts yourself. A shop should be held to a higher standard.
My ECM cost $750. They overnighted it from Chicago. It only took four days to get to Kalispell and about 1/2 hour to install it.
I'm not usre what killed the Lift Pump, but the dealer in town here in WA thought it could be realated to the ecm failure. My Alternator checked out fine, even thouhg one of the codes was overvoltage. "voltage too high to ECM" or something like that.
