Fluid for nv5600?

When I was reading about filling it, I don't remember any mention of needing 6 quarts. I only remember reading about overfilling by 1 quart. I'm pretty sure that's what I did.

This is interesting, they must have made a change after the 02 trucks.
On mine, built July 02, 6 quarts is above the top PTO bolt hole. Sitting on level ground and filled through the top PTO bolt hole, mine will only take 4 1/2 quarts. My neighbor has an 03 with the 5600, I'm going to have to compare it to mine and see if there are any differences.
DWeiler is right about the temps. I run about 170-180 on the highway empty and have got as high as 220 loaded in the hills. Running 5th gear or 6th gear makes a big difference also. 5th runs cooler than 6th in most cases. Even though I can climb what ever hill in 6th, I will downshift to 5th and actually watch the temp come down if I'm running loaded.
Colder weather doesn't really come into play, this winter I don't think my trans temps have come off the peg yet, there is no heat to be made when it's cold out.
Again, I think oil choice is more preference (and availability) but I found MTF to have a better shift feel to it and it did run cooler ( I found) when I had a chance to run it back to back on the same run loaded.

Glad were are pretty consistent in temps-------i have been razzed a few times by family/friends for all the monitoring/gauges but my rear diff gauge saved me once from a blown/leaking axle seal,as i noticed it was running 40F hotter on one run---pulled over to check and was down 1 1/2 litre of fluid.
I never got to be a pilot but this makes up for it!!

RV2........6 quarts is all you need for a fill.
You don't have to overfill the 5600 trans if you don't want to. The reason that most of us do overfill them is that there is an oiling issue with a couple of bearings in these trans.

The way I and others look at it, oil is cheap compared to a new transmission so what is it going to hurt. If you work your truck and want it to live as well as last, what's an extra quart or two of oil. I like to think of it as cheap insurance!

A question about the amsoil. On thier site they say mtf is for light duty trucks, but recommended for the nv5600. The mfg is for heavy towing or trucks with a lot of torqe but recommended for the nv4500. I guess my question is I use my truck for a lot of towing and it does have some up grades. So why is the mfg not the one recommended for these trucks, they are built to pull right? I'm just asking I don't know a lot about all this, I'm just learning. I'll buy the mtf if that is the best for it.

Here's one for all that don't know, I'm not trying to sell the stuff but the site will answer a bunch of questions about what oil to use in what component. Fill out the info on your truck, car, motorcycle, boat, whatever and it'll tell you the recommended oils, filters, spark plugs wiper blades, air filters and what not in a simple page.

I drained the fluid from my 5600 and added 6 quarts through the shifter opening and looking into the trans I can see the top of the pto cover and top bolt, it is not covered with fluid, should I add more or is this sufficient?
