FASS priming help

While I am waiting on another VP44 to arrive, I decided to install the FASS before work today. Should I fill the filters with Diesel prior to starting, or will it do that itself? Any pointers are appreciated. THANKS!

Bumping the starter will run the FASS for 24 seconds at a time, and suck fuel from the tank. I would THINK that the filters would fill with fuel and then start pumping toward the engine. You could fill the filters with fuel if you want. That would keep you from pushing air through the lines to the IP. I would THINK the air would be pushed on through the return as fuel fills the supply line, and give the IP full fuel. Anybody able to confirm this?

The instruction manual that comes with the FASS systems actually tells you to NOT fill the filters, that its a self priming pump and will fill them itself. When I installed mine, I went ahead and filled them anyways. I figured it would help make things easier on the pump, keep less air from getting to the VP, and figured what could it possibly hurt anyways.

Which instructions did you have? I did a quick check of the install instructions on the FASS website, and the only priming instructions I saw said (refer to owner's manual).

The "refer to owners manual" note is why I asked here. I bumped mine over several times, and had hardly nothing in the filters, but my IP is dead so......

I tried disconnecting the feed line to the IP, and still very little in the filters. The pump is running though, I definitely hear it, and it is installed/connected as per the instructions. I admittedly did a rush job though, and will be checking everything over a second time in the morning.

After stumbling onto some similarish info. With my fuel gauge at just above 1/8 tank (just where the 1st pump went out), that my tank is dry?!?!?! Could a malfunctioning fuel gauge have caused my LP/IP death?!?!?!

Getting 10 gallons of fuel after my 1st cup of coffee saturday AM! The new IP from MWFI should be here later in the afternoon.

OOPS! Yeah, that could have helped the LP and IP along.

Don't fill the filters!
If you unscrew the fuel filter (pressure side of the pump) just enough to let the air out, and bump the starter.... you will here the pitch change on the FASS motor when the prime catches. Be ready ...and as soon as fuel starts to leak out top of the filter, screw the filter back on full. Works every time... with just a mild diesel bath.

just out of curiousity, what is FASS' reason behind not filling the filter before putting them on? I filled mine before putting them on and never had a problem with trapped air. I didn't even have to crack an injector line or anything.

Unfiltered fuel that could get to the injection pump. NOW if you filled the water separator only.....that would work.

Rowland is correct. Leave the water separator tight. This is on the suciton side of the pump. Crack the fuel filter loose to bleed air. The pump should catch in about 30-60 seconds....once you hear that, tighten up the filter quickly. I would keep bumping the engine to allow the FASS to bleed air and to force fuel to the injecion pump and injector. I let mine run for about 5-8 mins when i did FASS install and injection pumps.
