Engine makes noise when turning off

I have a 99 24v diesel which I recently purchased, when I turn the engine off sometimes it makes a huff/puffing sound. Is this normal maybe due to compression of engine? I does not do this all of the time.

Mine doesn't do that. You may want to check the intake hoses from the intercooler up to the intake plenum and make sure they are tight.

My '99 doesn't do that either, just a little chirp from the serpentine belt.

That high compression Cummins stops turning pretty fast when you shut it down. A good deal of energy is stored up in your spinning alternator, fan, power steering pump and so on. That energy is still trying to move with the Serpentine belt and the sudden stop of the engine causes the little "chirp" as it all comes to a fast stop. This is a normal occurrence and causes no harm to anything. Some people use a belt dressing that helps quiet it down a little while the rest of us just pay it no mind

FBARON3 Mine also makes a puff sound when I shut it off. Sounds a lot like a hiss or a puff of air coming from the engine. Seems to do it a lot more after hard use, or if the engine is quite warm. Mine does not do it all the time either. I'll have to ask the dealer and maybe I'll get some kind of answer, like oh thats normal,

Mine has a slight hiss for a short while after shutting down. Have never worried about it but now you guys have got me curious as to where it is coming from.

Are You running the ac when it happens? I've notice that mine does a hissing sound also. But its always when I have the ac running. It's the ac system settleing down.

My A/C is never off. Actaully I did think that was the source of the noise but never can remember to shut the A/C off before killing the motor. One day .......

Mine does it with the A/C as well, so Im pretty sure thats your problem. I doubt it is harmful but it probably would be good to turn off the a/c when you shut down or start.

[/quote] It's not harmful at all, and NO need to take ANY steps to prevent it - it's merely the built-up pressure from the high-side refrigerant bleeding down as it normally does in regular operation - you just don't normally hear it because of other vehicle noises. Only reason you might NOT hear it at times when shutting down, is because the A/C compressor is at a point in its cycle where the pressure has nearly bled down to its low PSI, and the compressor hasn't yet restarted - so when you shut the engine down, almost all A/C pressure has already bled away... NO big deal...

Even when I cool down the turbo, you can hear the turbo still spinning for about 20 seconds after the engine stops. I'm guessing those bearings are in pretty good shape! Sounds like a vacuum cleaner winding down slowly.
