I believe since new, my engine makes a ticking/tapping noise (very tinty sound - not a knock) when first started up in morning. After it warms (5 minuntes or so) and I rev a little, it goes away and does not return.

Is this normal for our engines? I thought I read several months ago that this was normal, but would like to know reason and why it does this?

Normal rattles of a cold diesel!! Mechanical tolorances are loose when cold, get tighter when warmed up. Cylinder head temps make a big difference in diesels.
