Squeal when turning engine off

I just bought my first Diesel this week, an '03 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins with 26k miles on it.

From not knowing how these beasts really operate, I have noticed that sometimes when I cut the engine off, as it dies, I can hear a faint squeal (kind of like a belt slipping). There is also a momentary shudder felt in the truck when it dies.

Is this something normal or something to worry about?

Thanks,
Rick

Welcome to the club The sounds you are hearing are "right on." You are stopping a big hunk of rotating machinery and some of the belt driven stuff doesn't stop as quickly and the belts squeal. Don't try to tighten them to stop the squeal.

Perfectly normal. The high compression stops the motor dead and the other components want to keep turning and the belt squeeks. The shudder is normal too for a lot of the same reasons as the squeek.

It's all normal. Welcome to the club, eventually people will come up to after you turn off your truck and let you know that they think something is wrong with your truck...

Welcome and wipe that off your face

Yes, what you are hearing is in fact the belt slipping. As others have said, this is NORMAL for diesels and ecspecailly the CTD. You will get this even more when you leave the AC on when you shut down.
Ah yeah the shudder, doesn't that just feel GREAT, a CTD shutting down, Oh, what a feeling
Get use to it because if it doesn't do that then you may have a problem

As I said earlier, WELCOME and get that off your face

I believe the belt cherp is related to shutting down with the a/c still on, the compressor is still loaded and creats alot of drag on the belt, my 01 wont do it if I shut off the a/c first so the compressor will unload.

Cheers, Kevin

As to the shudder, make sure you shut the engine off with the doors closed.
That shake does wonders for the hinges.

Squeal normal, you'll find it intermittent, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.

Even though I had heard it was normal, and my PSD did it a little bit, I had a VERY pronounced squeal with this truck. As stated, it is belt slippage at shutdown. No matter what people say, I STILL think that this pronounced slippage, in conjunction with possibly a slightly defective belt, is perhaps what caused my factory belt to shred at only 5400 miles.

The replacement Mopar belt that the dealer installed doesn't squeal or squeak at shutdown at all.

It doesn't feel as great as cranking it up though!

Someone posted that replacing the stock belt with a Goodyear Gatorback belt will eliminate the shutdown chirp.

Other than Goodyear reatailers, does anyone know a place that sells the Gatorback belt?
