EGT install help

Hi, I tried the search for this also, but again came back with no info? I guess I just can't use the proper words for the search to work?
Anyway, I will be installing a EGT as soon as I get it. What difference in temps is there really between pre vs post turbo install? Seems it would be easier to install in the casting of the post turbo elbow vs pre turbo. If pre turbo really is the better way, then do you remove the exhaust manifold or remove the turbo? Are there any pictures on here of the process? Is there a gasket between the turbo and exhaust manifold? How far do you stick the probe down?
Thanks.
Oh yeah, this is for a 2000 2500 4x4 with 5 speed.

The temp before the turbo is the one you need to see. This is what the sees. After the turbo is what the muffler wsees.

goto edges website, they have pics in there instal manuals

here is a youtube video

it is better to read pre turbo vs post, as you get an accurate reading. its dirt simple to do and can be done in about 5mins
you will need a 1/8NPT tap, cant remember the drill size but I believe it was 5/16 or something like that, edges website will have the size listed.

drill the hole on 5/6 cyl half of the exhaust manifold as this is where the engine is the hottest, dont drill inbetween the manifold "divider"

Do you have to remove the exhaust manifold? If not how do you prevent shavings from entering the turbo?

Hmm, interesting. So why did they not tap it with the engine still running? Probably get too hot. They didn't say how far down the probe should be?

the grease on the tap will catch all the filings, I dont even worry about it. cant count the number of manifolds I've tapped, and never had an issue

the piece you screw in to the hole you tapped will only go in about 1/2 way as the threads you tapped are tapered, depth is not really something to worry about as you are tapped into a cavity...unless your probe is so long it hits the bottom of the manifold.

screw in the fitting then use a piece of wire to measure depth if your concerned that it will bottom out.

note that a tapered tap (1/8NPT or "National Pipe Thread")will get tighter the deeper you go so dont thread the thing in too far or you will make the hole too big, go down 4-5 turns then back out and check to see you have threads to the bottom of the drilled hole, if you do there is no need to keep, forcing in the tap to make the tapped hole larger, because if you do it allows the fitting to go in deeper which inturn allows the probe to go in further

I should have said probe length is fixed you cant change it anyway, the only concern is that it not hit anything once installed

Some Isspro probes are adjustable for depth in the fitting. As was said, take your time tapping the hole. I just measured the manifold thickness (about 1/4" IIRC) and put a mark on the threaded fitting of the thermocouple that distance up from the bottom. That way I knew when the bottom of the fitting was flush with the manifold inner surface.

I installed pre turbo as well. I did not run the engine at all. Mine is installed in the 4/5/6 manifold tube (see picture). I used a punch to mark the hole. I then drilled a pilot hole, and used progressivly larger bit until I had the correct size hole. I used a shop vac near the drill bit to capture almost all the shavings. I tapped the hole until I had threads to the bottom of the hole. Used the vacuum and then a small magnet to capture as much shavings as possible. A small film of anti sieze on the threaded insert and the probe was installed. Took me maybe 20-30 minutes. I bought the Isspro set and I was able to set the depth of the probe so that was never an issue for me.
