EGT Tap size, and questions with install. Help Appreciated

EGT Tap size, and questions with install. Help Appreciated

Hey guys. This weekend I think I'm going to install my EGT gauge which I've been putting off forever due to me being afraid. I think I'm going to stop being such a panzy and just go for it.

Anyways, I bought a Cobalt EGT gauge and have a couple questions.

First and foremost what size is the tap for the gauge to fit in. I believe I lost the instuctions that came with the kit.

Also, what size drill bit should I use to drill the hole itself.

Also, there is a red (assuming power) black ( assuming ground) and white (clueless on what this one is) that plug into a male female connector to the back of the gauge itself. Only question is does this sound right with what color the wires are, and what is the white one.

IIRC it's a 5/16 or 11/32 bit, and 1/8 npt tap -- normally.

i just did mine last weekend. yup, its a 11/32 bit w/ the 1/8x27 npt tap. just make sure you drill the manifold in the right spot i didn't realize there was a divider in the manifold which cause my bit to break off into the turbo. so i got to spend the rest of the afternoon pulling the manifold and turbo assembly out to disassemble the turbo and make sure i got all the pieces out.

Dang...I didn't know about a divider. Glad I got lucky...sorry you didn't, too.

yeah it sucks, but it happens. at least i'll try and keep people from making the same mistake i did. i've welded the hole so i don't have an exhaust leak. the best place to drill is to drill on the left side of the manifold going to the turbo flange (as your looking at the motor from the passenger wheel well) if that makes sense.

I believe the white wire will be for the lighting of the gauge. You can connect this straight to power (so it's on all the time) or you can hook it up to your dash lights so it's only on when your dash lights are on.

Since i dont' know exactly what guage you have, double check to make sure.

I checked the install instructions online, it shows 12v to dash for the white wire. I would certainly imagine to a dimmer.

Just a bit of advice to go extra careful with the tap.

When I did mine drilling went fine, and the tap was going butter smooth, then with no warning, stress or effort, the tap broke off clean in the manifold.

And trust me, the manifold position on a 6.7 is well... less than friendly.

Told me a few hours to get it out, thought I was gonna have to yank the whole manifold for a while.

Just a friendly bit o my two pennies....

Also when you drill / tap put grease on the bit and the tap to catch the metal. If some fall down don't worry it will blow right out the exhaust. good luck and don't be scared

I started with a smaller drill bit and worked my way up. I used a shop vac at the drill tip to pick up any shavings. When using the tap, use grease and make a half of turn forward and the 1/2 turn back. This keep the cutting edge of the tap clean and will help prevent them from breaking which is not fun.

Also, might want to tap towards the back of the manifold wall were cylinders 5 and 6 exit.. Those seem to run the hottest.

I used a dremel tool to make a spot for getting it started in at an angle like this. Angle it into the rear channel, avoiding the divider:
