DIY 47re
im planing on adding a billet input shaft on my 47re the tranz has alittle over 60,000 miles never been apart shifts good every things fine.
my question is should i do a rebuild on it since im gonna have it apart and how hard it to change all the clutches and every thing else. a local shop wants $1,400 to do all the labor and i provide all the parts (to me this seems alittle off)
i was looking at sun coast extreme duty rebuild kit would this kit be complete for all the gaskets and seals
http://www.suncoastconverters.com/do..._products.html
ive rebuilt an auto tranz before but it was a few years ago and it was a chevy th400
would i need any specal tool to take this project on????????
thanks

My experience says KD band may be weak link in this tranny. Billet input shaft is a optional upgrade, but perhaps is more of a good feeling thing. Likely hood of failing input remote. Likely hood of transfering money from your pocket to someone else is very great.
$1400 is probablly close for a custom trans job without any parts profit. Shops generally hate to do that even though may not say so.
Special tools required for OD repairs. At least you have to be very inovative on OD unit and a few places in 3 speed section require experitse.
Unless you're really working it out regurally, get a little more return and use out of your investment.

At 60k, I agree, its hardly worth putting in just the input shaft. This assumes you aren't going nuts on the power.
When you do rebuild, if you decide the input shaft is worth getting, you should also upgrade to 48RE guts. It will all fit in the 47 case, but they allow extra clutches in the three speed section, and 6 pinion (vs 5) planetary sets. Also, get a 48RE OD section, which is much improved over the 47RE. It will bolt on.
The $1400 pricetag is about mid field of the rebuilders. If a rebuilder will offer a warranty, and the price is under $2000, get it done. No warranty, the price should be down around $1000 or less.
As far as DIY, it takes a bit of skill, and a general ability to turn wrenches is a must. Also, you MUST have the FSM or equivalent ATSG manual for the trans.

$1400 for labor alone? Wow...
And to think I took apart a brand spanking new 48RE (no miles) to upgrade the input shaft, band, lever, accum piston, valve body, and other misc pieces...
Get a manual, choose a good builder, buy the needed parts from them so you can get their advice for your DIY build.

I am gearing up to do one with that same suncoast kit. I got the ATSG manual off of ebay for like 13 bucks. The overdrive section is a little tricky but with press and a good eye it can be done. Just do one section at a time and take lost of pic's and take your time looking at everything and how it go's back together. Soak all the clutches for 30 mins before you install them.
