Second Gen? It should be the transmission cooler for an automatic tranny.

The tranny cooler is in front of the radiator. That is the Tranny heat exchanger that is below the turbo.

i will explain this to you cause no did already...
Your auto tranny has 2 (two) coolers for it. one is an oil-oil cooler (under the turbo, against the motor), the other is an air-oil cooler (the one in your grille).

follow the tubes from the driver's side of your tranny and you will see where they go

Give that man a cigar !

Just like he said, there is a radiator style cooler up in front of the intercooler, and the heat exchanger "barrel" under the turbo. That one uses engine coolant to assist in cooling the tranny fluid.

I don't think I would call it an oil-oil cooler. Maybe a liquid-liquid cooler. It has coolant running through a set of fins inside, and the tranny fluid flows through the fins.

That's why it's called a Heat Exchanger.
