Clutch Problems

Clutch Problems

I have a 2001 with a 5 speed. The clutch has twice bled off while I was on an incline waiting to pull out on a highway. I also have noticed that after the truck sits for a few hours that there is not as much pedal. After I use the clutch or pump it about twice it works fine. Fluid is fine with no leaks. 107K miles with no problems till now. Should I start with the slave cylinder? From reading some of the post it looks like this forum is loaded with a great deal of knowledge, so I am looking for some advise.

Bo, speaking from experience.....go to the dealer and buy the entire hydraulic clutch assy from Dodge...about $200 bucks. I had similar problems and tried to replace just master cylinder and it AIN'T WORTH the grief of trying to bleed it out. The entire assembly is much easier to replace and there is NO bleeding required. The entire change out takes about 30 minutes with standard hand tools...

10-4 sounds easy - any secrets to bleeding the system?

The entire assembly is much easier to replace and there is NO bleeding required.

OK - I need just a little more help here. I have all the components installed, but I can not attach the two lines together. The system that I took off was one single line, but the one from the dealer was seperate. Do I need to release the slave cylinder to attach the lines? Please advise and thanks.

It was the master cylinder leaking by the way.

The clutch bleedoff problem is in the master cylinder. You can save money by simply replacing it, but getting air out of the system can be tough. The individual parts are avialable at parts houses or, cheapest, at South Bend Clutch.

The dealer sells the whole hydralics as a pre bled assembly, which isn't hard to install, especially now that it comes in 2 pieces. Problem is it's spendy.

I also paid $194, but have to admit that it was the simplest installation for a master and or slave cylinder that I have performed. I spent about an hour with the repair and the only issues were unhooking the clip from the clutch pedal and hooking the darn hoses together. Both issues very simple after finally figuring them out. Truck is performing great now. It was worth the cash for me to only be out for a short time on a weekend. I probably would have taken two days to bleed the system!
