Catalytic Converter
Catalytic Converter
I've been looking at repalcing the exhaust and on most aftermarket stuff there is no catalytic converter if the system connects to the down tube. Or it is a Cat. back setup. Can anyone tell me why? If I get a system that has no converter what will be the difference? Will I have a problem passing the emissions test?
Thanks for the input.

Then what is that thing in the exhaust pipe before the muffler?
I was under there the other to measure the pipe and there is a container of some kind and then the muffler down further, I thought the first was a converter.

24 valve trucks could pass the EPA regs without the cat so Dodge removed it.
Since they didn't change the exhaust system, removing the cat caused a "drone" or resonation.
They put the resonator in to get rid of this annoyance.
Basically a baby flow through muffler, nothing more.

We get that question 10 times a day, if it looks like a cat and smells like a cat it must be a cat right? The 24 valve system was catless, give us a call we have all the MBRP systems in aluminized, 409 and 304 stainless, in singles and duals etc. They are the easiest to install as they have 100% welded hangers just like the stock system and reuse the stock rubber mounts, no clamp on hangers or the like etc. The muffler is also packed with a ceramic blanket and stainless steel wool, won't blow out and get louder over time etc and doesn't make back pressure like the hollow core mufflers that have no packing in them at all either. Call us if you have any questions we'll be glad to help.

It may be splitting hairs, but then again...A catalytic onverter is not a required equipment law. It's an emissions standards law. If a vehicle (gasoline or diesel powered) is able to pass all of the stringent Federal emissions certification tests without a converter, then it can be sold without one.
Catalytic converters themselves have never been mandated for cars or trucks. It's just that the emission standards for cars have been set to a standard that can only be obtained with a catlytic converter.
The reason for catytic converter equipped diesel trucks is that the NOx (Nitrogen Oxide) emission standard had been introduced for diesel vehicles.
Note that the 5.9L 24v Cummins does not require a catalytic converter in order to meet emissions standards, and therefore it is not required!
