Blow By at higher boost.

So one P'ed off ride home from work with the Edge on 5 netted me oil dipping down my front fender. When I replaced my vp44 last Jan., I broke off part of the the nipple on the crankcase breather that the hose attaches too trying to get it off @ 10ºF. So my rigged up fix has the hose laying on the road some where. Now that the hose is gone and with boost @ 34psi my engine compartment got an oil bath. I'm pertty sure that thats not normal. The engine has 182,000mi. on it and 20,000 with mods I have listed. So do I stop the moding progression and save up for a rebuild on the engine, or do I mod it to where I want, and cross my fingers that it'll hold up for another 100,000? I like running on level 3, and only go up from there. I'd like to base line the engine at that power level and start over at level one on the edge as my daily driver setting. Any one in the same boat?

Are we talking a stream of oil or drip drip drip? What were your egts like on the run?

I wasn't lookin' at the egts because the boost alarm was sounding @36psi, and going over 90. Like I said I was alittle cranky. So I guess they were ok, I was empty no load. As for the amsoil dripping down my fender, I had to clean off the battery, the under side of the hood, ect. Because the breather tube is MIA, all blow by is going up and spread by the rad fan. If had to guess on the quantity of blow by oil, i'd say a small spoon full. I haven't seen it repeated, but the roads are all ice and snow now. I was thinking that could this be a case of high drive PSI with the stock turbo?

Unhappy

Ok... So either this a dumb Question, or nobody knows. I found our blow by tester at our shop. If anyone would like to know what I find out, chime in. I work at a boat yard In Seward Alaska. We are a Cummins dealer, but the big shot NW cummins in Anchorage plays dirty and we don't see much. So we have the tester and specs for the blow by test for 12v's and CR's. Funny thing, no vp44's in the marine line up.... We figure that the specs should be the same as the 24v CR. Just thought that all that viewed this thread may have some insite.?.. As for TCW-3, I could tell you all a thing or two about how it works in 2 cycle engines, and why... It's not going to help my blow by, and it'll just blow two-stroke-smoke out your pipes at the ratio that I read people using... Sorry, off topic.. Well, ANY Input will give me an idea of what I suspect is the case.... worn out engine at 185k......

Im experiencing the same blowby issue and sofar have not been able to identify the cause. I can tell you that my blowby doesnt appear to be influenced by boost #'s. My truck randomly leaks oil from time to time. Sometimes it lasts days and sometimes its one occurance. Strange!! What causes this blowby w/ only 85,000 miles?

The simple guide i've read to blow-by is that if you cap the hole off and the blowby blows off the dipstick tehn you have problems. Any less than that and its more than likely not a problem. A little blow-by is normal after a hard run on these engines. I would fix your breather tube first and see how much blow-by you are getting during a normal run.

Thanks guys. I'll lookup the specs of the test at work today. THe tester fits in place of the breather hose. It has a air flow restiction on the output side and psi test port between that and the engine. So a restricton insted of a plug must mean that some blow by is normal. This is used insted of a compression test to determin health of the engine. Excessive blow by means leaking rings. The amout of oil spray at that time has me nervous about adding any more mods. So I hope I'll get to do the test this week or over the weekend. We (wife and I) have a new baby, so free time is MIA. Thanks all.

Also remember that Vacuum leaks can cause increased Crankcase pressure as the vacuum pump vents to the inside of the timing case. This can also attribute to blowby.
