Engine shudder above 2300rpm *** Problem Found: Lift pump bit the dust.***

Hey guys, hows it goin? I just bought my 99 CTD auto, quadcab and extended bed about a week ago, and im having some issues. The truck runs great at any RPM below 2300, no matter what throttle position, but when you take it up past 2300 the engine shudders real bad and shakes the whole truck. Doesnt matter what gear you're in when ya do it, highway, taking off from a light and stuff, it all is the same.

I'll be checking the lift pump pressure in a bit (if i can find out where the schrader valve is on the VP44), but are there any other things you guys can think of that would cause this?

Thanks,
Sean

just bought the truck with 122K on it, so will be doing that today as soon as UPS drops off my tools (just moved down from Chicago). I did drain the water out of the separator, and nothing but clean fuel drained out.

what color is the filter? the filter is always the cheapest and easiest starting point.

havent pulled it yet, as i said, im waiting for my tools to arrive today. The one i bought is a purolator from the parts store, and its sitting in the box here on the desk.

I would guess its safe to assume that only the 2001+ models came with a schrader valve on the VP44 banjo?

Alright, i changed the filter out, and man that thing was black. So i get the new filter in the canister, get it all tightened up and loosen the banjo bolt up on the VP44 so i can bleed it. Well, im getting no fuel, after about 9 key on, tap the starter so i get 25 seconds of fuel. I can hear the lift pump running, but im getting nothing out of the banjo, and when i open the water separator drain, im getting nothing out of it either. Any ideas?

alright, did some more testing, and if i sucked on the line going from the filter to the VP44, it'd start getting fuel. In short, diesel tastes pretty yummy (kidding, of course), and the lift pump is shot and not pumping at all. Ordered a carter replacement pump from summit and i'll have it on wednesday, along with a FP gauge. Hopefully im replacing this in time to save the VP44

lift pump is replaced and the truck drives like brand new No more shutter from the engine and it smoothly revs all the way up to about 2900 where it shifts on its own. Fuel pressure is around 14psi idle, didnt check WOT as im more concerned about paying attention to idiots on the road here than the gauge.
