My uncle bought a 98 2500 4x4 quad cab, shortbed, 5 speed 24 valve cummins probably about a year ago. A while back it started smoking, and missing at higher rpm's. I told him it was probably his lift pump, so he ended up changing it, and everything was fine until now. You can still hear the lift pump running strong, but the truck is very hard to start. Right after he put in the new Lift pump, the truck took a little longer to start, but it wasnt near like it is now. Just recently it has started bieng very hard to start. My cousin(who drives it most the time) says it starts pretty good in the mornings when its cold, but that once it gets warmed up, it wont start to save its life. He said you have to crank it forever after it gets hot. Hes thinking that thew injection pump has went south, but it still has good power, and every time it starts, it shoots a nice puff of black smoke. The lift pump had probably been out for a while before he bought it, but it ran fine, so he didnt replace it/or really even know that they go bad easy. So my question is; do you guys think the Injector Pump has/is about to die? Or(hopefully) could it be something simpler and cheaper to fix? The truck has NO performance modifications, but it is straight piped, which shouldnt hurt a thing. It has probably about 130,000 miles on it now. Is there any codes that could be set off that we could check to see if that was the problem or not? If so, where could we have them checked? Thanks for any information, or suggestions.

We get some Dodges in asking what could be wrong with engine not starting when hot , after the sticker shock of how much a pump and labor is , they will be out there trying to start the truck , I usually go out there with glass of cold water and pour it on the pump and it will start , but for sure the pump still needs replacing .

I'm having the same problem starting after it is warm. First start of the day ok or if off for 4 or more hours.
About a year ago my lift pump went bad so I replaced it. Then shortly after the injection pump went bad and replaced it too. Two months ago I put the FASS System on and it seems hard to start after warm. Could this harm the injection pump?

Well; I was hoping it wouldnt be the pump, but i guess it must be. Any idea where the cheapest rebuilt pump could be bought at on the net that is a reliable place to do buisness with? Just wondering in case we cant find anywhere local. So, does it not hurt to pour water on the pump? Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the help Dresser Dave. I will let my uncle know about the shop, and see what he wants to do. We havent had any codes checked yet, but were pretty sure its the inj. pump. Thanks for the help.
