NEW problems
NEW problems
So after I read the codes on the truck, I got the dreaded P0216...
Before I had no problems with the fuel and smoke. I tried the APPS reset, and no such luck.
Here is the new probnlems I have.
at 1500 RPM's, I get a BAD skip in the idle. On a gas motor, it would be like the plugs are fouled, and it is missing some cylinvers. I now get MASSIVE amts of white smoke coming out of the exhaust, and I get a horrible stench out of there (the diesel stench). Does this men my VP44 is dead? If so, where can I get a new one for the best price?
Is a rebuilt one as good s a new one? What do you guys recommend?
Mind you, I am a teacher and I am getting married in a few months, so I don't have a lot of cash to blow on a pump right now.
Thanks

Yes, the miss and white smoke is a sure sign the timing is slipping.
Personally, I think a rebuilt is better than new, as whatever is going to go bad has, and has been fixed.
Pretty sure you can't even get a "new" VP44 anymore, only a "remanufactured" or rebuilt.
Cost will depend on if it's a Bosch reman, or an aftermarket rubuild.
Sorry, don't know where you can get one, but there have been numerous posts on where and how much, so I'm sure others will chime in shortly.
There were going for $1300 from Dodge (plus install) when I had mine replaced,
have seen quoted prices as low as $850.

This is REALLY weird. I just got back in it, and took it for a drive. Here is what I figured out:
When I fired it up, I got a cloud of black smoke, adn then its all good. No more skipping at adle, and no morejumping around. I took it for a drive, and I could not get it to move very well. Felt like the fuel lines were clogged. I then threw it in neutral, and gassed it. Felt like the crap got cleaned out, and all waws good. Threw it abck in drive, and it drives like new????
I reset the codes and took off for a drive. I got to my buddiues house, and parked it. No new codes. I then left about 1/2 hour later, and got the same code as before. It runs great, but the code comes up.
Should I just keep the codes cleared, and save up for the pump, or should I just bite the bullet and change it out?
thanks

See the two brass fittings on top of your fuel filter canister? That is where you'll need to test your fuel psi on your 99. NAPA has an a/c fitting with a schrader valve that screws right in place of the brass plugs.
