Auto transmission shifting questions.

When I am starting off SLOW from a stop before I can get to 20 it has already shifted all the way to 3rd, and when I come around a corner or slow down to like 15 or so it will stay in 3rd and not drop unless I get on it. But from a stop if I am moving the tack up to 2000 or 2400 it shifts fine. Could it be not enough pressure from the VB or loose bands? Thanks this site is awesome!

Sounds like your TV cable is out of adjustment.

Try adjusting your throttle valve cable, it should help, let us know if you need instructions.

I have the same symptoms as you. How is the cable adjusted?

Thanks for the link but it only talks about adjusting it if on full throtle it shifts to soon. It shifts great at full its only when I give it light throtle that it shifts to soon or when slowing down like at a light and then taking off before stoping it stays in 3rd unless I get on it a little. Or mabey I am not reading it right, should adjusting the TVC fix this problem. Sorry for being hard headed guys.

yes the TV cable being out of adjustment will affect part throttle shifts. I would adjust it, and go from there.

THROTTLE VALVE CABLE
DESCRIPTION
Transmission throttle valve cable adjustment
is extremely important to proper operation.
This adjustment positions the throttle valve, which
controls shift speed, quality, and part-throttle downshift
sensitivity.
If cable setting is too loose, early shifts and slippage
between shifts may occur. If the setting is too
tight, shifts may be delayed and part throttle downshifts
may be very sensitive.

ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE
(1) Turn ignition switch to OFF position.
(2) Remove air cleaner if necessary.
(3) Disconnect cable end from attachment stud.
Carefully slide cable off stud. Do not pry or pull
cable off.
(4) Verify that transmission throttle lever is in
fully closed position. Then be sure lever on throttle
body is at curb idle position.
(5) Pry the T.V. cable lock (A) into the UP position
(Fig. 228). This will unlock the cable and allow for
readjustment.
(6) Apply just enough tension on the T.V. cable (B)
to remove any slack in the cable.Pulling too tight
will cause the T.V. lever on the transmission to
move out of its idle position, which will result
in an incorrect T.V. cable adjustment. Slide the
sheath of the T.V. cable (D) back and forth until the
centerlines of the T.V. cable end (B) and the throttle
bell crank lever (C) are aligned within one millimeter
(1mm) (Fig. 228).
(7) While holding the T.V. cable in the set position
push the T.V. cable lock (A) into the down position
(Fig. 228). This will lock the present T.V. cable
adjustment.
NOTE: Be sure that as the cable is pulled forward
and centered on the throttle lever stud, the cable
housing moves smoothly with the cable. Due to the
angle at which the cable housing enters the spring
housing, the cable housing may bind slightly and
create an incorrect adjustment.
(8) Reconnect the T.V. cable (B) to the throttle
bellcrank lever (C).
(9) Check cable adjustment. Verify transmission
throttle lever and lever on throttle body move simultaneously.

I just wrote a comment about the shift kit on another forum. Here it is:

I installed a Transgo on my 47re. The hardest part in the whole process was getting that freakin' e-clip back on after I re-installed the vb. If you think you can do it, go for it. You need to have some mechanical experience. Set up a foldable table in the garage and put newspapers on it. Keep everything organized and clean. I used empty egg cartons to keep the bolts numbered. At the end use lots of brake parts cleaner and compressed air to get any shavings out. Try to keep them out as much as possible from the beginning though. Just take your time and do it. DON'T expect to have it done in 1 day. It can be done over a weekend. I took my sweet time because I was in no rush to finish and didn't have to drive the truck.

It definitely made the tranny much nicer. Before the shift points were all messed up and it would shift under light throttle, etc. With the shift kit it feels like that's how it should've been from the factory. However, now I realize how inefficient the factory torque converter is. While the vb was out, I also upgraded to a heavy duty band strut, accumulator piston, and front servo cover. Thought it wouldn't hurt. Also, replace your separator plate, it's probably worn.

If I'm not mistaken it will shift like you describe if the cable is unhooked as well, I fixed an older dodge a couple of months ago and the TV cable was unhooked at the arm and the spring was just hanging there (this stuff was unhooked down by the tranny not up near the pump!)

I have a 12v that shifts a bit early as well as is having up shifting problems. With adjusting the cable that is show in page 8 of the above link fix both of those problems?

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Cable misadjustment works both ways. If cable adjustment is too long it will upshift to quickly at low to medium throttle but might be considered O'K at full throttle. A short cable adjustment will raise upshift points at lower throttle openings, and still be accepted at WOT. The clip that unlocks cable adjustment at APPS is a bear to unlock.
The proper adjustment is at closed throttle the 3 inch lever is fully forward on stop in VB. The lever moves immediatelly and smoothly as throttle is opened. You might be able to move lever rearward slightly at WOT.
