5th Gear Nut Fix Couple questions
I was on my way into work today, and I went to pass a car, and my truck made a loud bang and popped out of fifth gear. I figured it was the famous 5th gear stunt. I just had this transmission gone through 3 weeks ago and now this. They fixed third gear synchro and a broke washer. Now 5th goes out. I put a new clutch in it at that time so it should be good to go. I was just wondering the difficulty of fixing the 5th gear thing. I guess you have to pull the tailshaft housing off then you can see the problem? If anyone has had this problem please help me with any tips to keep this from happening again. Is there a better nut out there?

Chapter President
If the shaft and gear are in good shape and the truck is at stock fueling levels, then the revised 5th gear nut available through DC can be installed with some success. The problem is that the gear and/or shaft are frequently worn and no nut or aftermarket form of retention will fix the problem or stop it from happening again unless the worn parts are replaced.
