2002 lift pump advice
Sorry, I searched, and am more confused, but here goes....
My father, just last month, picked up a 2002 2wd with a 6 speed from my now ex BIL, who bought the truck new. Truck has 160K miles on it. At about 140K, (4-5 years ago) I went to my sister's house and helped my BIL put a VP44 on the truck, and a lift pump in the tank.
He also put one of the the low pressure lights on the truck after I left, as they lived 3 states away then, and told my father the light is supposed to stay. on constantly. Light has been staying on, except when lugged, until yesterday when I changed the fuel filter. I used the same Baldwin PF7977 I use in my 06.
Light will come on when first cranked, until you start moving it. Fuel bowl looks to be staying full. Turned key to start and then run without cranking, and pump ran for about 20 seconds, but I am beginning to think the pump may be getting weak.
Or did I use the wrong filter?
If the pump is failing, is the in tank set up an ok setup on a stock truck? Or would we be better to go external? Truck will not be modified, as my father is 72 years old, and I doubt he will ever hook a trailer to the truck.
Thanks

The filters for the 3rd gen are a smaller micron 7. I believe and the 2nd gen are 10 Micron. better micron due to the HP and injectors of the 3rd gen.
2nd gen you want good filtering but the injectors on a 2nd gen are not as sensitive i would say.
so going to a tighter micron may be causing some stress on the lift pump?
lift pump could be going out. So on this truck is there a fuel pressure gauge?
you could get a fuel pressure tester gauge it would tap into the schrader valve.
assuming that the lift pump that was replaced in past was a stock oem replacement.

Thank you again, now to read more and troubleshoot.
Changed the PF7977 filter for what the local Napa gave me as the proper filter, a 3585XE. I live in a small town with only a Napa and Carquest, with other stores 30 miles away.
Napa filter was harder to get in, seemed slightly bigger and longer. Truck would not stay running. Put the PF7977 in, truck would run. Napa back in, got it running, but took longer to crank etc, so put PF7977 back in.
Filter that was removed was a Puralotor F55360. Will see if I can find one of those, or a Fleetguard FS19855 tomorrow.
All times after running, and immediately unscrewing the housing top, fuel would spew out so, I know we are getting some pressure from the lift pump, but not sure yet of pressure. Guess I need to get a gauge coming.

Yes, get a test gauge on the schrader valves pre turbo and on the vp.
Those test lights usually stay lit well below the needed psi for safe operation.
Post up what the psi is and we'll know what is going on...
Any codes with the key on off trick?
