2001 power steering pump
2001 power steering pump
To amyone who could help. Hey guys I have a 2001 2500 4x4. I just replaced the power steering pump, which was quite the job for me. I am average at best mechanically. I got the thing installed and got fluid throught he system, which actually took longer than I thought, I took the truck for a ride and when I got back I had a couple drips of oil from the area I was working. It did not leak while running so I started the truck and it started leaking drip by drip. I crawled under the truck saw that it was coming from the area where the spline (male end of the pump seats into the motor). Excuse my lack of knowledge on the terms. I don't know why that would be leaking oil. It doesn't look like there should be a gasket there. I know it was a real pain tightening the bolts for the pump. Could that be the problem or is it something else? Any Ideas would be greatly apreciated. Thanks
there is a seal in the vacuum pump that the P/S pump slides through. the vacuum pump drives the P/S pump.
if you removed the P/S pump you disturbed the seal, it most likely is leaking. get under the truck with a blow gun and blow off the end of the P/S pump where it goes into the vacuum pump, if it is leaking, it will drip in 5-10 seconds with the engine running
you need to remove the vacuum pump, disassemble it, drive out the seal and assemble it. take note which way the seal goes, the instructions suck.
when putting the P/S pump back on, use the touch of a surgeon keeping it lined up perfectly, have the couplers lined up so you dont have to giggle it around.
part # from Cummins for the repair kit 4089742, $22 or so.
the best way is take off both pumps, reseal the vacuum pump, put the two pumps together on the bench, then put it back on, that seal is VERY touchy.
i have left the P/S hoses on, got the P/S pump out of my way then removed the vacuum pump, resealed it and put the vacuum pump on the engine then put on the P/S pump, you have to be real super careful, you can push that seal out when trying to get the two pumps lined back up.

I am back at it again with my power steering pump. It was leaking oil and I didn't have time till now to fix it. I just took the 4 bolts off for the vacuum pump but something is holding the pump from coming off. any ideas would be appreciated. I just need get this thing off to put the seal on that goes between the vacuum and power steering pump. Thanks
