I have a bad oil leak on drivers side looks like its the whole side because it is wet from power steering all the way back to starter.Would this be the tappet seal and approx how much would a shop charge to repair.

I was hoping that was it but it looks like its up a little higher and after cleaning it dripped down block in a few spots from ps mount towards the rear in about a 6 inch line

I am having the same issue. Leaves the same oil puddle you described - a line about 6-8" in length down the driver's side of motor, running down the pan as well. It has taken a bit to figure this one out.

I have an 01 5.9L 24V HO, 6spd

First we pulled the oil pressure switch (located on driver's side, above starter, below fuel filter) can see it clearly through the wheel well compartment. We saw that there was a lot of oil around the switch. We thought that the switch was cracked or the O-Ring bad (Switch is $225 from NAPA) After removing the switch, replacing the o-ring (twice) we figured that it was something more.

We removed the ECM from the side of the engine (just above the oil switch). This exposed the side of the head between #5 and #6. There is an oil leak at the mating line between head and block. It is only thin line of oil, but it is a leak that is leaving a rather large mess.

So, now to replace the head gasket.

If it is the tappet cover I got a guesstimate of about 440 dollars from guy that replaced my inj pump a couple of years ago. probably be wednesday before i can have them look at it. Lady that answered phone said if it was vacuum pump seal it would only be leaking near ps pump.

was told the tappet seal is leaking as well as the vacuum pump. The mechanic is out until tomorrow and lady wasnt sure if power steering and vac pump have to come off to do tappet which she said will lower my cost on labor. So far we are at 507 dollars for the tappet seal and waiting to see how much more labor for vac pump seal which she said would be about 247. Not sure If I will have enough money to fix both.

hopefully that is 1/2 hr after removing inj pump. Its been at shop since Tuesday was supposed to be finished Saturday but got called and told it will be late Monday. Only had funds for tappet seal at 507 dollars. They said the vac pump seal leak isn't to bad yet so its next on the list. I might try that one myself.

When I called Saturday I asked if they ran into any issues as it was supposed to be done. They call me today wanting to know what I meant because they are saying engine has a miss when they started it cold. I am starting to regret taking it in to get leak fixed.

a little key in the front that he said times the pump is being replaced. The mechanic is covering the cost since he did not replace it when he installed the vp44 a couple of years ago.
