A few things, does it miss at idle, or have any white smoke? If they smashed one IP shaft key it sounds like the didn't take the time to make the shaft key, shaft and pump gear were clean and free of oil. And maybe they did it again.. at this point I doubt any old key will be a a good idea since it may not be in time with a generic key. Could be something simple like a loose injector line or cross over tube in the head also..

Almost hate to tell you this, but each reman pump comes with a specific numbered key, and it MUST be used with that pump. It is how they calibrate the timing. The key number should be on the pump somewhere. It almost sounds like they just grabbed a key............

This only applies to the VP44............

He said he first noticed it was missing when he put truck in reverse. When I was there he revved it to about 1500 rpm there was no smoke but I could hear the miss he was talking about. He thought it was key because he never used the one that came with new pump which was about two years ago. Last I heard he was thinking there is an electrical problem. Just hope this doesnt cost more than what they wanted to replace tappet cover.

he showed me the old key and noted there was a number on it so I guess he put right key in. But It was running good when I took it to him with old key in it.

Is this a Cummins shop, dealership, or an independent shop?

He didn't put it in backwards, did he?

Still no solution he is doing a compression test now. Said something about a diesel smell and no 4 injector not making a difference.

last word was mechanic was taking 2 injectors to be tested. Could replacing tappet seal have caused any of these issues? Already lost 2 days of work and my blood pressure is sky high.

good luck with that it takes 1.5 hours just to get all the stuff out of the way to get to it I will bet he got dirt in one or two injectors doing the tappet cover and now your paying for it, it ran perfect before he worked on it.

So far they cleaned 2 injectors, did a valve job, replaced lift pump and last word he was looking into timing key and possibly pulling vp44 again to have tested. It sounded better but a bit of white smoke. Starting to get complaints from my lawn mowing customers . I feel bad but the oil leak had to stop.
