1999 cuts out & idles...check engine light on

My 1999 with 171,000kms with stock lift pump & vp cut out this morning when i was leaving my driveway. It was a cool morning & truck was still cold. I turned around & had throttle again...then It suddenly cut out again. I know I need to check the codes, could it be anything other than the vp with these symptoms?...Im crossing my fingers.

thanks

Keep crossing those fingers. Sorry but it sounds like my exact problem when I had VP issues. Would run fine then just randomly cut out (dead pedal).

What codes were you getting?

It could also be your TPS. The only way I know to diagnose and intermittent TPS problem is to watch it with a Scan Tool while driving it.
You cannot manually adjust the idle on a VP44 engine. It is controlled by the computer. Whatever you adjusted was probably the stops for the cruise control, TPS, or kick-down cable. Those should be put back to wherever they were.

I scanned it today it threw P0121 code. Its the TPS code, where & what is the throttle position sensor? Any idea how much they are?
thanks

The TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) is essentially a rheostat (dimmer switch) that varies the amount of voltage it sends to the computer/injector pump depending on where the accelerator pedal is. Second Gen, 24v trucks have the TPS under a black plastic cover just in front of the air horn. The TPS is known to be problematic on these trucks, and Dodge wants ridiculous money for a replacement. A member here sells what I understand to be a fantastic replacement for this, in quality AND price. I do not remember his name though. He is an advertiser, if memory serves, so you should be able to find it there, or someone else will chime in to this thread and let you know.

Is the TPS the same as APPS? I found a thread on resetting the APPS. It wouldnt hurt to try that?

Yes, they are the same. For whatever reason, Dodge calls it an Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor instead of Throttle Position Sensor. I use TPS because it's shorter and easier to say.
No, it won't hurt to try that.

I reset the TPS or APPS & the truck seems to be back & running just fine, but Ive still got the CEL on. How can I clear the check engine light without a scanner?
thanks

I prefer the recalibration method, but for a complete fix the timbo part is the way to go. Auto Zone can clear the code.

The CEL problem is the ECM is not communicating with the PCM on some level. Check the connections for the ECM, on the left side of the engine, and the PCM, located on the firewall, behind the air filter. Disconnect them and reconnect them, possibly putting some dielectric grease on the connectors while out. Mine did this once and I actually swapped out the ECM at one point, but the ECM wasn't the problem, it was one of the connections. The ECM has an 8mm or 10mm bolt holding it in.

Isnt my cel problem related with the apps not working properly? Now that ive recalibrated my apps & the truck is running fine cant I just clear the codes?

I rule nothing out as I am not the one who designed that system, but the CEL error is the communication link between the ECM and PCM is not working. This is a connector problem or broken wire(s) someplace. When I had the problem it was a connector.
