Resetting the Check Engine Light 1999 3500
Hi everyone,<br>This little problem (plus just buying a used 3500) has brought me to this page. Many thanks for having me!<br><br>Anyway, I was out of town and had my check engine light come on. There just happened to be a Dodge dealer very close to where I was, so I stopped in and had the codes run.<br><br>Apparently, it is the common crankshaft position sensor, but since I am a DIY type, I just bought the part to install myself.<br><br>After installing it, the check engine light will not go off. <br>Contacting the dealer reveals that it *wont* go off until they reset it using the DRV....... $85!<br><br>This seem like a rip-off to me, so I am wondering if there is any secret trick to reset the light?<br><br>Many Thanks!<br>Sean

Welcome to DTR Sean S I had the same problems, my check engine light went out after I replced my crankshaft sensor and started the truck the fourth time. I think it will reset after the computer reads no errors on the 3rd or 4th start.

Update...<br><br>Ok, I left both positive batt' cables off for an hour, tried, no luck.<br><br>Then off for 3 hours, no luck.<br><br><br>I'll try the multiple startings and see if that works and get back to you guys with the answer.<br><br>Honestly, I don't think it's fair for the DIY'ers to have to pay to reset this thing even if they do their own repairs so I do *intend* to find a way.<br><br>All the best<br>Sean
Re:Resetting the Check Engine Light 1999 3500
Cattle Hauler nailed it....<br><br>4th start, on the button.. Light gone.<br><br>For the record, I did have my batt' disconnected for both the one hour, and then the 3 hours prior to the starting test (just to be completely accurate if anyone else needs this info down the road).<br><br>Ok, so the dealer service is full of it for not knowing this (I called 4 dealers).<br><br>Well guys, many thanks! I'm a machinery dealer (lathes, mills, grinders, CNC, welding..etc) and plan to use the truck to haul a gooseneck with stock and forklift. I'm sure I'll have quite a few more questions and hopefully some personal experience to relay in the future (this stuff ain't "lite"
<br>I moderate on some home-shop/machinery type sites, so I might be able to lend a hand to those type of questions in return for what is obviously the plentiful help here.<br><br>All the best<br>Sean

Re:Resetting the Check Engine Light 1999 3500
I've heard that you can clear codes by unplugging the three connectors behind the air box (this includes the ECM). never tried it though. no power cycles and no overnight battery disconnects. <br><br>anyone verified this?
Re:Resetting the Check Engine Light 1999 3500
Sean next time you disconnect, do the negative cables. It's an air bag thing and safer. Also while disconnected turn the key to the run position and leave it there. After the time (3/4 hour or so) turn the ignition off, hook up the batteries, turn on the ignition without starting, slowly press the throttle to the floor and slowly let it up. Then turn off the ignition. Next start it up and you have reset the throttle which may make it run a lot better especially at higher rpms. Many times this fixes cruise control problems, high rpm problems, and a few other problems.
Re:Resetting the Check Engine Light 1999 3500
Sean you have fixed your engine check light problem but you have not erased the stored code in your ECM. Do exactly what Doug said above and the code will be gone. ;D

Wow! It almost seems like those last comments were of some whitches brew conjured up almost 200 years ago! Does high tech really improve things or hinder them?
