Question Why no trans oil cooler in the radiator?

I just purchased a 1993 W250 turbo diesel with intercooler and automatic.

I need a new radiator and noticed that there isn't a built in transmission oil cooler.
I thought you needed it to also help warm the fluid in the winter.
Does anyone make replacement radiators that has this feature?
Or is it really not needed?
thanks

none of the diesels had it, they are on the passenger side of the engine block, and some even had another one that was mounted under the truck, if the tranny gets so hot that you need the tranny cooler out front on these trucks its probably too late anyways, these trucks need all the radiator they can get to especially when its hot outside.

The cooler on the side of the engine is much bigger than any in-tank cooler. They knew these things were gonna get hot so they wanted to give the trans half a chance.

I dont know about yours, but every auto that I have seen has an oil cooler for the transmission on the left side of the radiator up top. It's a small one, but it is an oil cooler.

The heat exchanger beside the block is like wannadiesel said, much better than any in the radiator. From there the fluid goes to an air/oil cooler in front of the radiator and then to the trans pan, or to a dealer add-on underbed with fan air/oil cooler then to the pan.

do you need a second or third? trans cooler? My truck wants to run hot when towing a large load, as I have mentioned in other posts , and I figured it was the transmission getting too hot. Other wise it is fine . Would you gain that much by adding another cooler. How would you go about putting a electric fan on the radiator instead of the factory one ? Would that help?

I mounted mine under the bed. It has its own fan and a thermoswitch for the fan. I have yet to see the pan temp get over 170.

You could get 'em new with three coolers. There was a dealer option for an underbed cooler with a fan.

bamaredneck- if your engine is getting too hot towing, verify it with a mechanical gauge, and then look into your cooling system.

I had heard of tranny coolers in with the radiators, but have never seen one. Must be a feature on older vehicles. Seems like a disaster in the waiting, to me.
