Pull the cap off the radiator and see if there is any water in there. If not you may have a head gasket problem. Hard starting, white smoke and lack of coolentin the radiator could be an indication of this.

Did you say its gotten worse? I'm not saying you're having the same prob. I did for sure just telling you what I went through. When my first pump started to go it would not start right off, then it would take just a touch longer but would still start every time and had a touch of grey/white smoke, then it got to where it wouldn't start without ether, then only when good and cool when I was lucky, then no start at all. If it just keeps getting worse and especially hard to start when hot then its bout shot. If you have trouble with hot/operating temp. starts, run water over the back of the pump for a min. then if it lights right off you know your pump aint got much time. I could be wrong. Just sounds like what I went through. Best of luck!

Brand new does not necessarily mean good.

It sounds to me like you are getting air in the fuel system...

i have seen a lot of problems with the plastic fuel lines from the tank to the lift pump causing starting problems, maby just try replacing with rubber hose, or i like to use th 3/8 steel brake line you can find at napa. i have delt with three pickups my self and reaplacing thoes lines cured the problem,
