Grab the WH1C. Functionally, it is the same as an HX-35, but when it comes to upgrading, you have the advantage with the WH1C, as it will accept the HTT stage IV compressor wheel/housing, whereas you can only go up to the stage III with the HX-35. Yes, the WH1C has a silencer ring that you can and should remove for the sweet music

I have the WH1C and I'm very happy with it. Yes. It has a removable silencer ring and it sings very nicely. I assume you have the H1C now without the wastegate. The WH1C spools up quicker due to it's 12 cm turbo housing so the WG is needed to comtrol maximum boost. There is a plug under the mounting for the go pedal cable into the intake manifold where you can hook the WG control and your boost gauge. See my gallery for pics of my setup. Since you have the IC you can probably just bolt on the WH1C with no problems. I had to do some grinding on my compressor housing to adapt it to the non-IC crossover pipe.

My boost goes to 27# within 1 second of flooring the go-pedal and it sounds like a jet taking off and looks like one from behind.

I don't know what the difference between the WH1C and the HX-35 other than construction. I think they perform very similarly.

Can you use the WH1C as the top turbo for twins? At what point does the wastegate become insufficient?

Is a WH1C just a H1C with a wastegated exhaust housing? Can a H1C be "upgraded" to a WH1C?

Yes. The HX-35/12 is a very common top turbo because it's already there. A WH1C would work just as well, and a hybrid WH1C would be better still.

In a single application the 12 cm wastegated housing seems to be a problem over 300 HP. The wastegate can control boost, but the housing is choking the engine.

Almost. A WH1C has MWE slots in the compressor housing, they let excess pressure bleed back into the compressor inlet when airflow is low. This is needed to prevent compressor surging at low engine RPM and heavy load. Get yourself a wastegated housing and a Stage I compressor set (yes, they will sell you one) and you will have a WH1C.

so im kinda in the same boat. im looking at getting the HTT stage IV and the 12 cm housing. but im not wanting a wastegate. i dont really plan on having massive amounts of boost so is a WG really necassary?

The 12 cm housing will definately cause you to have to much boost and would also restrict your exhaust flow. The 16 non-WG is a better choice I believe.

I have a 16 non-WG with my H1C. Better than stock, but I need more.

Can I take a WH1C's compressor and mate it to the 16cm2 hot end and run it, or must I give them to someone for mating and balancing together? I realize these things spin at outrageous RPMs.

Yes. I took the wheel and compressor housing from a WH1C and mated it to the H1C innards. The turbine wheel/shaft is the same on both the H1C and WH1C. The turbine housings will fit either also.

As for balancing, as long as the wheels haven't been damaged they will work fine since on the WH1C they're balanced separately. The H1C is balanced as a unit so if you mark the wheel position on the shaft before disassembly and assemble it the same way you're OK.

Be careful if you remove the turbine housing and work it off evenly so as to not damage the fins.
