When changing fuel filters

Do most of yall use ATF to fill the filters up? I don't keep a 5 gal. can of #2 just sitting around and all I've ever heard from most people is using ATF in the filters. Also thought about using the Lucas Fuel Injector Cleaner to pour in the filter but figured it would be to much. What do yall usually use?

Talking Whatever Is Handy

I have used white jug PowerService, new engine oil of various SAE wts, Kerosene, and other stuff that I won't mention.

It really isn't critical what is in there, as over 90% will cycle through the return line, thus quickly diluting it with fuel.

The next empty oil jug you get, fill it full of diesel, when you fuel the truck, label it, and put it where you can find it when you need it; very handy for numerous reasons/experiments.

Yeah i would use the trans fluid, i do it alot with larger engines and even in my own truck, it wont hurt anything and you dont have to worry as much about any dirt, sand or water.

Um, why not just use the priming lever on the pump in conjunction with the little screw/drain on the top of the filter mount? It's the one with the little groove cut into it.

Install your new filter, loosen the screw, pump the lever till you see fuel coming out, tighten the screw. Easy peasy.

My engine always seems to be stopped with the pump already pushed by the cam whenever I change the filter. We keep a bulk tank of diesel on the farm so I always just fill it with fuel before I put it on.

I used to fill it with clean diesel - but now I just turn on my lift pump.

Diesel fuel addititive is the best to use if you don't have #2 laying around. Everyone should have some fuel additive around. ATF is not meant to burn, use at your own risk.

Ive heard its not so good for the seals in the VE-44 high pressure injection pump. ATF fluid has friction modifiers. Injection pumps need lubriticity. Use diesel or additive to fill it. The pump and injectors will get an immediate healthy dose.

Fill your filter up with ATF?

Yuck. I wouldn't do that in a million years.

I just use the primer lever on the lift pump. That way everything's filtered by the time it gets to the IP, and you don't run friction modifier through your tight-tolerance plungers. If you don't want to spend the three minutes to use the lever, at least use Diesel or additive...

if you dont have diesel lying around use priming lever or crack open some injectors and blow about 5psi of air in the tank until fuel comes out of cracked injectors and then start it up
thats the lazymans way

How do you pressurize the tank?

Pumping the lever only takes two minutes...

I use Lucas or just use the primer on the lift pump. Or pour the fuel out of the old filter into the new one. And yes I know that the fuel will not be filtered if you pour it in the middle of the filter but its better than ATF, 2 cycle, motor oil or any of that.
