What is this foam for?

While I was prepping my cab floor for rust removal I found this piece of foam partially attached to the floor under the seat belt re-tractor.
There is one just like it on the other side, but it is still attached.
Can anyone tell me what it is for and whether it should be replaced?

Thanks,
Chris

I've recently taken the interiors out of 2 1992 CC trucks in preparation for rust work and didn't see anything like that. The only thing I found behind the seat belt retractor was a flat foam washer that seemed to be an anti rattle device.

That would be my guess is that it is an anti rattle or squeak device.

I just pulled the whole interior out of my reg cab '91.0 and I didn't see that under the seat belts either.
I am guessing the same as MrFusion, with an anti rattle unit.

Thanks for the responses. Perhaps my truck is special
Just to clarify the location of the foam, here is a pic of where I removed it from.
You can see the Torx bolt that mounts the driver's side seat belt re-tractor in the top left edge of the pic.

Hey, That's not fair yours is redder than mine.
I think that foam is to dampen vibration noise. but then I get some pretty strange thoughts.

Not sure where it came from, but I have seen adhesive backed foam wrapped around various connectors on my truck especially under the dash, I would assume to suppress rattles.

That area is hard to get a spot welder in and to stop the metal from bending and leaving a hole in the back storage area they used the foam to seal it/keep it together. I saw the same thing in the cab I restored as well as a cab my buddy was restoring. It's impossible to seal that area with a MIG/TIG. The best solution I found was to tack weld to give the metal panel some support and then use high quality seam sealer both sides. Or flip the cab on its side and weld it, seam seal and use good paint to stop the rust. You'll have to cut the cab support though

They came like that from factory, if you have something different I would say someone was there before you.

Its hard to describe, but that foam is used as an adhesive between part of the seam where the rocker, cab and inner rocker panel join, in the rear aspect. Its used in that spot, the reinforcement plate for the 6x9 mirrors, and the reinforcement plate for the accelerator pedal on the firewall side.
