Cure for the common foam???
OK, I did a search here first to make sure I wasn't preachin' to the choir, so if you already know this trick then you shoulda' shared it! So, here goes....I was at the 7 Feathers casino, south of Roseberg, Oregon, the other night, on a return road trip from California. Since I was checking mileage, I was doing the "foam fight" thing during fill up (yeah, I know you're not suppose to pump your own in Oregon, but a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do!) Ahywho...., the boy wonder attendant strolled over and asked me if I knew the top off trick for diesel. Naturally I said that I did However, if he wanted to do it for me....what the heck, go for it junior! Well....he obviously knew about the sensitive egos of us diesel dudes and dudettes! Cause he told me about HIS trick and then showed it to me....And I have used it a couple of times since and found that it works pretty good. It doesn't cut out all of the foam, but I would say that it cuts it at least 80%. So, here is what he showed me...At the end of the pump nozzle, on the underside, is a hole about the size of an eraser on a pencil. On the other side of this hole, inside the nozzle tip, is the auto shutoff sensor. Got it?....Ok, fill the tank at your normal fill speed. After the auto shutoff, take the tip of your index finger outta your nose and cover the hole on the underside of the nozzle tip. You are going to want to be wearing a glove for this trick, preferably plastic or rubber (if you are too cheap to buy gloves then ask your doctor if you can have the pair he uses on your next physical) You will have to suspend the nozzle over the fillneck. Now, start pumpin' the fuel. You will immediately notice 2 things...1) The pump will run a bit slower.... and 2), most importantly...the diesel will be coming out of the nozzle nearly foamless. As I said, you will still get some foaming, but it is greatly reduced. And you will find that the top off is alot quicker. More akin to topping off with a gasser. If you remove your finger while filling you will immediately see the almost clear diesel foam up. According to the boy wonder, it has something to do with cutting off air to the shutoff sensor which is what causes the excessive foaming? Try it, it works...Oh, and by the way, the truck stop restaurant at 7 feathers has great grub! And all you "off road" diesel buyers in that neck of the woods need to be buyin your diesel at 7 feathers. I HIGHLY recommend it!

Not to steal your thunder ten8fiftyone, but there is a slight variation of that trick I've been using for a while now... you can rest the end of the nozzle on the top of the filler neck to plug that hole and it works the same way minus the diesel on your hands, gloves, or whatever you used to plug it up with.
Discovered it by acccident since i really like to FILL my tank to keep as acurate an eye on my mpg's as possible...
Using the 'full is full, too full...spills' rationality, that means the cap threads should be submerged.

I've been doing the same as dakar, and fill it till it's a few inches from the top. (So far my calculated mileage has matched my overhead readout almost perfectly.) Hey ten8, I like that condom idea! The condom for the pump, and the foam for the filler tube= no unwanted pregnancy for the CTD!!

Good trick. I like to top it off when towing, rarely do it for just normal driving.
There has to be some foaming in the normal fill, might help if the hole is closed from the beginning of the fillup. Have to hold the nozzle the whole time.
