What did you do to your Gen 1 today?
Truly a terrifying moment in my life. For a fat older guy I rolled out from under that big 'ol Buick in record time with agility I thought I had lost a long time ago. I have never, ever again, used a trouble light with a filament bulb. Nothing but LED for me since that day.
Cheers!

I have actually had mine for about 3 years, but had not used it until about 6 months ago. I was helping my brother put up a fenced run for his dogs and he was using his Cordless Makita impact to drive in 6" screws through 3-4" posts, like they were going through a loaf of bread. I was amazed!
So started using mine...and I have to say it's one of my new favorite shop toys now.
It's chuck is for the small 1/4" hex screw bits, but my brother gave me a set of adapters to be able to use 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" sockets.
Like these...

So much like yourself I only use LED trouble lights now.
1. That's what you get for living in Commiefornia!!!

2. Pull the 4.0L and swap in a mid 80's 5 cylinder Mercedes Turbo Diesel!!! No emissions inspection (at least in PA), better mileage, and another diesel in the stable!!
In all seriousness there are a couple of pretty decent Jeep forums out there: NAXJA, Pirate 4x4, CherokeeForum. No smog test where I live but feel free to PM me if your stumped. I'm pretty familiar with the XJ's. So is my cousin who is a mechanic by trade (and pretty decent at it).
2 things about the Cherokee:

Other than the obvious.

I am lost when it comes to this smog BS. The NOX failed at 15 MPH but passed at 25.
next thing is to replace the MAP sensor and see what happens.
Maybe the same is available at the auto parts store for shade tree rednecks.
I wouldn't be putting parts in unless the 'puter is throwing codes.
I'm with J_Martin on that. Throwing parts at a Cherokee (or any other vehicle) to meet emissions can add up quick. Cleaning the throttle body is cheap and simple as well and might make a difference. What year Cherokee is it?
seems to make something else that wasn't a problem crop up.
I just thought of something I missed. the fuel filter couldn't hurt to replace that. Or Maybe the left hub cap?
Here in BC they finally dumped our mandatory emissions testing, after 20+ years. They figured that the number of pre clean emissions vehicles that are on the road was insignificant.
All I can say is I'm happy to be able to insure my vehicles with no hassle. I feel for you Mark...I had a 70 Sport fury that I had to run through almost ten times before I squeak it through. At $25 a test it starts to add up.

What part of the emissions is it failing?
I have had 3 Cherokees over the years. The most common problems that effected emissions were: intake manifold gasket leak, clogged crankcase breather tube, TPS, fuel pressure regulator at the end of the rail, and a leaking EGR.

The NOX is too high at 15MPH. passes at 25MPH though.
