Replaced the calipers today on the 89 D350, after seeing the crud than came out while draining the calipers to put them back in the boxes for the core, I decided to replace the master cylinder and in the process of pulling the axles and hubs to replace the wheel cylinders. I have the older style axle nut socket which worked on dual nuts but the 89 has the nylon lock nut with the little wedge, it got to be too late to continue. Will the older dana 60 wheel nut socket work on the single nut axle?

Another question, the parts store can't tell me which wheel cylinders I need, there are 4 different choices depending on brake shoe size, should I use the same size wheel cylinders as already in it or use a different size? Thanks!

Is your truck a Dually? Mine has 1-1/8" wheel cylinders and 3 inch wide shoes. Others on this forum said the nylon locknut that came original isn't good and recommended the double nut with the tabbed washer that is available at Napa. I don't have the part number but maybe they can find it for you. That's what I used. If your's is not a Dually then I think the axles are different.

No it is not a dually. I use NAPA parts and will check with them on the nuts.

That is the reason I flush my brake fluid every year or so through my whole system....keeping fresh fluid in the system extends the life of most of the components in the brake system. Since I started doing this I have not had a major component failure in any of my vehicles.

Pulled rear brakes apart so I could order the correct size wheel cylinders, they were 1" 12X2 1/2" lining. The drums are 3" though, go figure!
And some day I would just like to come in this thread and say: I just drove it today!

A lot of people change to the 1-1/8" cylinders and 3" shoes. Stops better and lasts longer.

I’m with you on just wanting to drive it! I had a hard time going to sleep last night as I schemed about how to get my truck done. I’ve been without it for too long and had some days where it was inconvenient to try to correlate rides to work without a vehicle when my buddy from work has been gone. I am determined to have the trans in by Saturday. Just dropped the transfer case off at a shop today to have the thing rebuilt and converted to a 29 spline.

I feel yall's pain.

My M880 was down for over a year waiting a trans transplant. My CTD was down 3 months last fall for a trans rebuild and now has been sitting for about a month while I redo the front axle/hubs, etc.

That's one reason I have 9 vehicles - at least a couple are running at any one time...

Yeah. My problem is my truck is my only vehicle. Things just have been difficult getting parts.

Yeah it is nice to have options so you aren't rushed to fix something. The downside I have found is that you always have something in the garage waiting for your attention lol.
