Thumbs up VE Pump Gurus........

Any of you other guys who have helped me since my recent joining of the DTR, & recent purchase of my new love.

Any of you guys wanna come to TEXAS and tune on my ol VE?

Seems nobody around here at the "diesel performance" shops know what to do with a VE...

I can turn a P pump up and down all day long with no probs...but this ol VE, being MINE, I'm scared to tamper with it and mess something up.

I want to crank up the pump, do all the mods that need to be done, including timing, plate, & governer spring. But since nobody around here does these trucks...I don't want to be the guinea pig.

I can pay you in beer or turbocharger parts, lol. PLEASE HELP.

you may be looking at the wrong shops. the best deisel shop in my area, is a shop that runs on gas. i found myself there needing a 2 3/4" exhaust pipe bent, but while there and listnening to the owner, i knew he had a vast knowledge of the CTD. not something i was expecting being all i saw were drag cars with big block chevys in them.

but it was still a high perf shop so i guess they got into deisels too.

normal deisel shops dont want to add power to one with 'modefications'. they want to keep everything all stock, like 'the way it was meant to be run'. whatever...

ps this info isnt free...i want my 12 ouncer

Alot of the tuning is just trial and error. The best advice I can give you is to get a baseline of all readings (egt, boost) before and after each modifications or tuneup. This let you see what each individual mod will do. I have written an article in the tech facts section that shows the basic modifications or tune ups for the VE pump.

The main reason pump shops will not take a pump out of spec is EPA regs. If you get caught and they find out who took it out of specs..they get fined.

hehe your prolly right monty, which would explain why the best place i have to go, is the garage that contains only drag cars. you know they dont care about EPA regs and if THEY get fined, they are going to whoop YOUR butt for ratting them out!!!!

Hey Tex, the 1st gens are the easiest vehicles to work on. The VE pump is also the easiest to adjust. See this site for detailed instructions. http://dodgeram.org/support_pgs/diesel_ix.htm click on the more power link. It helps to write down what you do so you can change it back if you want to start over. I thought I would remember

I wouldnt worry too much about the EPA regs. I was only speaking from a shop standpoint. Same way with all of your engine mfgs. You bring an electronic engine to uprate, 99% of the time they will stay within the specs. The exception is that 1% where you either sign a waiver or are good friends with the service manager.

Do it yourself if you feel that you can. You will learn alot. If you can tune a 7100, you will have no problem with the VE.

Texas in the winter.. Man I'm all over that... I would love to be on the + side of the temp dial for a change.

Well Tx.. its gonna be alot of trial and error I am affraid. If you can tune a P pump you can definitely do this pump.

What you have to do is figure out what each component does then you will know what to adjust to compensate for smoke, temp or not enought umph..

The tech facts should help out but if not we can step you through it.

What do you want to start with???

I am more than willing to help out a fellow Gear head!!!

I"m probably gonna be there in early March but I'll be down in Houston. That is unless we head up to Hillsboro to visit the Grandparents. If we head up that way, I would certainly be willing to help ya get it done.

Yup, simply recognize the "nervous factor" and it's all gravy after that..
The VE is a pretty easy and forgiving pump to work on.
There is more than enough info available here and elsewere to get you were you want to go...
FIRST as mentioned, do some baseline readings.
If you get stuck there are no end of guys who'll help at the drop of a hat....including me... I luv these old girls... they just keep on keeping on.... know what I mean...

I'd hardly classify myself as a pump guru, but thanks anyhow. I'd suggest doing a search on "pump" in the 1st gen section and spending an hour or two reading anything that seems useful. Also look at the info in the FAQ section. Pump guru my foot, I'm still too nervous to put in a governor spring.

Thanks for all the replies guys. It really helps to know that you guys are here when people have questions.

Our shop has a booth at the local Farm & Implement Show for today & tomorrow. While I was there today I stopped & talked to the local diesel shop guys. We do their turbos, and we recommend our customers to them for pump service. Anyways, a few days after I bought the truck I stopped by their shop to get a price on a Pyrometer, and I asked if they could tune on the VE. I ended up getting my pyro off the internet, and didn't like the fact that they said they have little experience in the VE pumps. So today, the SAME GUY said they could turn up the pump for me for $175 but it has to be removed. I said I could turn some screws and gain the power without taking the pump off. I asked him about the giverner spring, and he looked liek he didnt understand what I was talking about...

Soooo.... It looks like I'll be doing some research in the next few days...I might gather up the courage to tinker with the settings sometime this weekend.

Carl...if you head to Hillsboro, call me up, I'm just 30 minutes south on 35, right near Baylor Campus. Maybe we could BS or have some beers.

To everyone else..thanks again for the replies & suggestions, it's very appreciated on this end.
