OK, two governor springs then. Gonna be a busy day.

I bought all the plumbing parts to install my gauge online from McMaster-Carr. If you want to do it like mine, you need a 1/8 NPTF to 1/8 NPTM mini brass ball valve, an 1/8" NPT snubber for water/light oils, a 1/8" NPT brass draincock, and a 1/8" NPT brass tee, 2 legs female 1 leg male. Plus you need a tapped banjo from Geno's. If you ordered tonight the stuff might make it there by Tuesday.

I have a piston lift pump on my truck. Install takes about 45 minutes.

Hey Wanna,

Well, I guess the FP gauge ain't gonna' happen...didn't get your reply til late last night, no time to order anything. At least you can show me *where* I can do it...

I'm tryin' to figure out where the closest Cummins dealer is to me so I can go get the lift pump and assorted parts to install it.
Maybe I could start on that the night before so all your hard work can be "properly" tested afterwards.

So, about how long does it take you to rip into a pump and make it "happy, happy"?

Vinny

Is there any special tools needed that I could bring? Vinny I have a Bosh and a Cummins dealer local to me so I could get stuff from them and you could pay me on the 22nd. BTW Today I was able to get the 3200 spring from my Bosh dealer for only $13. He and I talked a lot about the VE and other I/P's. He has a lot of experience with high perf. applications and was really not in favor of making big h/p with the VE. He said there are just too many short falls with that design of a pump, and there are some reliability issues as well when they are tweaked.

Vinny,

Sounds like you are going to have a wonderful time. Take pictures, show the before and after shots, do plenty of smoke shows and let me know how Bruno is making out after all is done. Wish I could make it out there.

Hey Bud,

Good idea, I'll take lots of photos...

As for smoke shows, much more abuse on that right rear tire and I'll need a new one come spring for sure!

We'll be sure to have a cup or two of coffee in your honor.

Vinny

Vinny- If all goes well, we should have the spring in and the truck "road tested" within a couple hours. Are we grinding the AFC lever?

Go ahead and swap in the piston pump if you want, it's not a hard job. You have to hack off some of the tappet cover insulation, it's just foam rubber. You can do the job with a sharp utility knife. Just be careful of the return line that runs right along the top of the insulation.

Greg- If you have a screwdriver that you think will work well on the low idle screw, bring it. I still haven't found one I like for doing that.

I agree that the P7100 is better suited to all-out performance applications. But unless your budget is large, it's usually better to work with what you have. Keep the VE supplied with pressure and run an additive to keep the lubricity of the fuel up and the VE will lead a long life even when cranked up. The advance mechanism on the VE is a really nice feature, too. A cranked up 2nd gen can be a bear to get fired up due to the fixed timing.

Hey Wanna,

Grinding the AFC lever can be compensated for by just turning the pump down if need be (yeah right!)...correct?

If it jams more fuel IN, and I can adjust the fuel OUT if I want...then I'm IN!

I have a compressor and air tools, so we can grind the bejusus out of it in no time...

Not really. Grinding the AFC lever gives you a lot of fuel at low/no boost. You can't compensate for it by turning the pump down. Then you'd have a truck that was slow and still smoky. We'll talk about it more when I get there and I'll 'splain everything.

Howdy All,

Well, Wanna showed-up just after noon yesterday and proceded to show me how the governor spring is done.

He whipped that baby baby open while I watched and I actually helped him swap in the new spring...
Personally, I don't see how anybody can do that by themselves...seems like it would be way easier with three hands...

Afterwards he tweeked the pump adjustments to get rid of that "jumping" that the truck did at idle, lowered the idle to where the truck doesn't feel like it's slamming into gear anymore, backed-off the FFS so the engine is no longer a throttle stab away from runaway, adjusted the Starwheel, and cleaned-up the rusty throttle linkage.

The truck is WAY more drivable, smokes WAY less around town, and seems to be getting much better fuel mileage.

Ggg stopped by in his very clean Ferd Turbo truck (his 1st Gen was surrounded by cold, dead, heavy equipment), and he watched Wanna put my pump back together (he just missed seeing the spring swap).
He went along with Wanna and I for the "test" runs in my truck after it was back together.

Later, after Ggg had to take off, Wanna finished doin' some final tweekin' of my pump,we took the truck out for a final ride, and then we went and got somethin' to eat at a local Rib joint.

All in all everything went extremly smoothly and quickly thanks to Wannadiesel...he's a great guy, really helpful and just chock-full of knowledge.

THANKS A BUNCH WANNADEISEL!!!

Vinny

It was good to meet both of yous guys. I really wish I was able to get there earlier and stay later. But sometimes stuff happens. It was fun anyway, sorry I had to drive the Ford but it will "fly low" much faster then the Dodge, and it was readily available. Notice I parked it out of spitting range. Next time we get together I will bring one of the Cummins powered trucks I have. On my first DTR meeting I had to show up with my IH 9300 4x6 Dump w/Cummins Big Cam 350. Anytime either of you need anything or are in my area give me a call.

I had a good time too! I was starting to go through diesel withdrawal. Gregg was feeling bad about showing up in a new Ford, but I had to drive up in a minivan.

Yeah, I did most of what Vinny says I did, but I didn't cure the jumpy idle. It just didn't do it after we swapped the governor spring, and I have no idea why or what made it do that in the first place.

Gregg, I found out that I might have to come out for the week between Christmas and New Year's, so we might be able to do yours then.

Vinny, thanks for dinner, those were the best ribs I've had in a few years. And the diesel fumes seemed to be just what I needed to clear up this cold. As I post this I haven't taken any medicine since lunch and I can still breathe through my nose.

Glad to hear that everything turned out really well for you Vinny. Glad to see the truck is finely coming together. I know it still has life it in. Less smoke, Wanna was willing to deal with LESS SMOKE
