Is this a turbo I should be interested in?

It's from a 2000 RAM 2500 CTD, auto tranny, so that makes it a HX35 with 12cm wastegated exhaust, right? Can anyone tell from these pics if that is in fact what it is?

Is it a big deal to reclock it so that I can put it on my non-I/C CTD? I know I'll need a larger crossover tube, but that's kinda already in the plans anyway. Anything else I need to be aware of? It's got about 80K miles on it. What does it take to rebuild/clean one of these?

The reason I'm looking at it is that it's cheap (less than $200) and local. I was thinking about just swapping to a 16cm exhaust housing to get more boost, but that'll cost me almost as much. So would this be a better setup in the long run?

I don't do a lot of towing, but I do drive up and down the hills (Sierra's) and spend a fair amount of time above 6500ft.

Thanks...

First HX35 I ever seen come from a 00 auto? Looks like a typical HX35 with a 12cm housing. However the wastegate accuator should have been part of the compressor housing I thought. I think it looks like an HX but on that truck it should have been an HY9 with a 9cm housing. Look in the exhaust housing 's inlet and see if there is a #12 stamped inside the flange. It should say 12 if its an HX35.

On a second look it seems that there is quite a bit of oil in the compressor for my liking too. I'd say if it's an HX offer him 85. It needs a rebuild atleast.

Seller says there's a 15 and a 12 right next to each other by the oil line inside the exhaust flange. There is also a 16. What does all this mean?

I'm sure its not, but to me it looks more like my hx40. My hx 35 had a machined surface for the intake tube to clamp on. This one doesn't. Also, the wastgate actuator setup looks just like the 16cm wastegated housing that came on my hx40 and the turbine housing looks to be larger and more domed/bubbled than the 12cm. I just went and compared the #'s from the pictured turbo and mine and the 90647 is the same. Might be an hx40/16cmwg. Just my thoughts on it.

I don't think that is a HX40. The exhaust housing doesn't look right. The impeller looks small for a HX40 also. Measure that intake impeller.

Here is what my 16 cm HX40 WG'd housing looks like.

Looks like an HX-35 to me.

Reclocking the compressor is not a big deal. Just pop off the snap ring, whack the compressor a few times with a mallet to break it loose, and put it where you need it.
