I am a new user in the past month, and have been doing alot of research on the site. It is impressive the amount of info available. I will be ordering an HTT Stage III compressor upgrade & 16 cm exhaust housing depending on the responses. It is my goal to use 4" downpipe from the turbo for my exhaust. I understand there are diffrent 16 cm housings, some with a 3" outlet and some with 4" correct? It is my understanding the 1994 thru 1998 trucks have the 16 cm housings with the 4" outlets, so that would be the one I am after correct? If so, is there an aftermarket 4" downpipe available that I should look into that works well with the 1st Gen? Am I going about this upgrade in the wrong way? Thanks for everyones responses is advance.
PS - I am interested in stout pulling, as I routinely drag around 15 to 20+ thousands pounds of hay.

As far as I know the 16cm housing for the WH1C/HX35 are 3" outlet only. You'd have to go to a HX40 or one of the Switzer S300 built ups to get a true 4" outlet.
1994 to 1998 trucks came with either a WH1C(94 and 95 trucks) or HX35(96 to 98) with a 12cm wastegated exhaust housing. None of them are 4" outlet, infact stock exhaust was 3".

All OEM turbo outlets are 3inch. The 4 inch outlet stuff is all aftermarket/performance stuff. 4 inch DP`s can be had from a bunch of places, some require fab/welding some don`t, I`m sure someone else`ll chime in. I have a 4in from Rip Rook http://www.sourceautomotive.biz/sa_dodge-exh.htm
It required welding on the 3to4 in adaptor (pic in my gallery) but I think Stan`s (don`t know the URL) comes ready to install. As far as an exh housing it depends how the truck will be used mainly. IMO for a 5 speed thats doing mostly low speed grunt work go for a 12cm gated housing.

another vote for the 12cm gated, had one on my 90' & the spool up was awesome, & they are easy to come by too, I have a couple laying around myself, as well as probably a hundred other users on this board!! LOL but I'd consider the 12cm, I really liked it on my 90', Dusty
12cm like these other guys say, I took my 16cm off and it's not going back on that truck. Lights the turbo earlier, cleans the smoke up and gets her moving ealier with my tight torque converter.

I went from the stock H1C with an 18 cm housing to the WH1C with the 12 cm WG. I drilled the center divider through the W hole to allow better flow for the front 3 cyls and added a boost controller. I'm happy as a clam with it. IMHO going to the 16 nonWG isn't worth it.

The reason I swapped it because my Goerend torque converter is too tight to light the turbo early and clean the smoke up with the 16cm on it. With 5 trucks on the road it doesn't hurt to have an extra turbo around.

More Info - I delivery this hay with 90%+ being just that - highway travel. Obviously I would like to be able to keep up with the flow of traffic. Will the smaller housing hurt me on the top end? I don't mind slow take-offs.....

i never seen any negative effects on the top end, the great thing about the 12cm on a 1st gen. is that w/out some mods the 1st gen 12-v's have virtually no top end anyway, I think mine would only turn around 2400rpm's or so (if that), so there isn't much if any way to hurt the top end, because the top end of the 1st gen's is still well within the effeciency (sp??) range of the 12cm housing, I think it's one of the best & most cost effective mods you can do to a 1st gen, but that's just my opinion, & based upon your everyday drive around/tow rig, not for the high hp guys, but just as a good all around mild bomb , you can't beat it, well worth the time/$ it takes to swap , Dusty

I would also like to goto a 12cm WG. Or a place to find one.
Reading though the responses here it sounds like it might really help with my towing EGTs. With the 18.5 if I get much under 1800 rpm I gotta let out of the throttle or shift down because the boost starts to drop off.
What is the "boost controler" for the WG housing that was mentioned in this thread?

A boost controler refers to either an adjustable bleed or adjustable restriction in the boost line that triggers the wastegate controller. Most stock Dodge/Cumminswastegate controllers open at 22-ish psi. By adding a bleed or restriction to that line, the opening point can be altered and more boost can be made
While it's true 22psi is roughly the sweet spot for the H1C, we tend to gain more than we lose by upping the pressure to about 32. The controllers are available on e-bay for a few bucks....there's lots of different ones. Dave will chime in with a link before long.....
