tranny problems
tranny problems
I'm new to the sight and first generation world.Bought my 1991.5 d250(completley stock except for 3 inch strait pipe) in november and has been in the transmission shop more than its been out.Had it out for 150 miles and it started slippin.Took it back and the guy said they couldn't get it to slip.Got it back 10 miles down the road and it started slippin again. It also shuttered and moaned shifting into second. He said its got to be rebuilt again (thankfully under warranty). What would cause that?
It was a stock rebuild, do to a lot of electrical work they had to do that ran up the bill very quickly at 87.50 an hour.Should i get a different torque converter and valve body or just go with another stock rebuild.I got the truck to be a daily driver and light towing ocassionally. Thanks in advance for any info.
I would put a valvebody in it, and other than that a stock rebuild. I would highly reccomend putting an aftermarket converter in it. Theres no point in building the tranny if you can't get the power to the ground, and the stock converter will not put the power to the ground.
If money is tight, you may be able to hold off on the converter, but if you do, you will have to pay the tranny shop again to install it, so you would probably be better off just doing it all at the same time.
I'm gonna try to scrape up some money and do that. This shop has been a joke I wish I would have done some more research first. Thanks for the help. There is still alot I'm learning and this site has been the biggest help.

I would see if you could get a refund on the tranny, and all the work, and go to someone else. Try that if the next one fails, the 1st time may have been a fluke.
When a tranny goes, it takes quite a chunk of change to get it going again, but in the end it's worth it.
Also, with the new converter expect to pick up a few extra mpgs, and you will notice a whole lot more power.

Hmm... I know Hughes has a pretty inexpensive converter, and it should work fine if you plan on staying close to stock power levels.
If you plan on making quite a bit of power, Goerend, DTT, or Suncoast make good converters for our trucks, but they are definately a little hard on the wallet.
