Re:Things to look for on a 91

Check for cowling cracks, open both doors and look at the cowling/fire wall to see if there is any problems. If the truck smokes like a train when your foot is on the floor it's been messed with. Look for any oil leaks on or around the front cover, p/s pump area. Check the bed in all four corners for cracks and look at all of the spot welds on the floor of the bed and door frames to ensure that there are no cracks in the welds. If the fuel pump is a different color than the engine or the paint is broken up on the bolts of the fuel pump someone has had their sticky little fingers in it so beware. See if it is aftercooled if it is thats good, 91.5 and newer are aftercooled. Try to find out who had it before you and call them up to find out the history. Good luck on your hunt for a CTD. If you dont mind saying what are they asking for it? Always curious to see what our trucks are worth out on the open market.

Welcome to DTR,
Is it intercooled? In '91, midyear they started intercooling - something you might want to consider. Check the gearbox for noise and how it shifts, some had "issues" with lube problems.
Chris

Re:Things to look for on a 91

it doesn't have to smoke....my truck is alot stronger than it was stock and hardly smokes at all.

If you're familiar with the CTD at all, look for the broken paint on the 4 screws that hold the AFC cover on. Look for the collar to be broken off the full load screw.

See if the e brake works, if not try to work that into a deal, I paid over $200 for the 2 cables I think, and that was my uncle's (chryco mech.) cost on them.

I have a 91.5 -- the cab is completely rusted out over the windshield -- when I bought the truck, it had a visor, and I didn't notice the rust. It went from the inside out. Just an area to look at that I at least didn't think of.

Alec

Not sure what you mean. I would have figured the early 91 would have the same front aned of 89-90. Dodge would only change the front end when the intercooler was added. If this is the case, I wouldn't let them use this as any bargaining tool. Certainly not if they removed a problematic intercooler and retro-fitted parts of the older version to get it sold. If it wasn't originally inter-cooled, and you can do the tranny work, $5-5500 might be a fair price. If had been intercooled, I think you have some more bargaining to do.
Good luck, Don

I assume all 91 models had the new grill, since 1/2 tons all have it, but don't need the room for an intercooler. I'd want to know more about why it was swapped. Personally, I think it's a great dealing point in your favor. Usually dealerships don't like to mess with frankenstein trucks, so you are really doing them a favor taking it off their hands. At least that's the way I'd play it

Maybe if you could find out if it is the 18.5 or 21 cm turbo housing? Does the cooling sytem look new? If it makes a differance, my 90 doesn'e have the ram, although I'm sure it was a cab/chassis.
