Another... Things to look for.

I read the other one... good advice. I'm new to this site... someone told me it was a good one and free!

Anyway, I've located a 93, 3/4 ton, 4X4, 5 speed with 270k on it for $3900 (ac doesn't work). From what I've seen this is a good price if it has no big problems. What about the tranny.... it's a Getrag right? How should it shift.... stiff.... sloppy, etc? (I've never driven one before). Anything else to worry about that'll cost big $$$ to fix?

If the shifter wobbles around, it's an easy fix. Remove shifter from tranny, put lower end in vise with a socket each side and squeeze the shifter metal tighter to the rubber insert.

What you don't want to hear is growling/grinding when shifting. The Getrag is inherently noisy. I definitely recommend Prolong or Militec 1 in the tranny. 230,000miles on original tranny, quiet and still going strong when I sold the rig. I could always tell when I needed to add some because of the noise level while driving.

Transfer shifter likes to rattle. Simple fix is hard rubber between shifter handle and "gate" actuator. Another really easy fix.

ya, the transfer case shifter buzz can scare you if you're not used to it. Mine does it a lot too, but I just keep my fueling gloves drapped over it and it shuts up. My truck is turned up a little bit, and since doing that the t-case will growl at low rpms and heavy throttle, didn't do that under 'stock' power, but you may hear various growls/buzzes at low rpm. These motors make a lot of vibration, just the nature of the beast
