Question Switches And Gauges ???

I am in the process of cleaning up the haphazard wiring mess in the wife's truck.

The previous owner is a retired mining mechanic and a general old jack-of-all-trades; but, he for sure ain't no electrical engineer.

I have never before seen so much black tape and scotch-locks, and wires hanging loosely everywhere, inside and out.

Please show me where you guys are mounting toggle switches and give me some ideas on gauge mounting.

He built a very nice real Oak over-head console, that houses tachometer, pyrometer, and oil-pressure gauges, along with the C-B and two handy compartments, the sun-visors mounted to the bottom, along with a light that looks like it came out of a first-class train car.

I have a three-gauge on-top-of-the-dash gauge-pod in my Ford; but, she says she don't want anything on top of the dash.

How much room is between the headlight switch and the power-mirror switch, behind the dash where I can't see??

I have considered mounting the auxilliary marker-light and trailer-light switches between them, if there is room.

What is behind that flat panel where it says Cummins Turbo Diesel??

That looks like a good piece of open territory.

Please give me some ideas.

Thanks.

I put 2 switches in the filler panel next to the cummins plate, where the 4wd indicator would be. Looks great and plenty of room behind it, plus if you dont have power mirrors, next to the headlight switch is a great place.

i have a 6-switch panel, from summit, mounted into the empty space to the left of the glove box before the dash "bumps" out next to the radio. i did have to cut a 1.5"x5" rectangle out of the dash, but all the wires stay hidden behind the dash and glove box, plus there is all kinds of room back there to fix wiring, installation, etc.

I made a panel out of plastic and mounted 4 switches that control some of my cab and rear facing lighting. It is in the space left of the radio. Don't know what went there but mine was open.
You can see it in this thread.

Trouble is she does have power mirrors.

There is a large space between the light-switch and mirror-switch; how big and close together are those two switches, back behind there where I can't see??

I poked my fingers up in there; but, there is something obstructing my examination of the territory.

If I could squeeze the truck marker and trailer marker switches in that area, that would be ideal to have the light functions all together.

Thanks.

I put 4 light up rocker switches around the cargo light switch lots of room, one on each side and one top and bottom( looks like the Simon Says game, even has the red one in the middle with red, blue, yellow, and green around the sides). There is not much room around the power mirror switch but if you get rid of the head light switch there is a lot of room. I also just put rocker switches for the head light and marker lights on my 96 about 2 hours ago. The switch would turn on the head lights but not the marker unless you pulled it about 1/2 way to the first click. The wires were good but I tryed about 5 switches and they were all junk. And yes I know for a fact thar the wiring was good and even used my DVOM to check the switches and wires and the switches all had the same prob. And it tried to melt the wires just like my 1st Gen so I will relay the lights in a day or two to take the load off the switch.

That is what I remember removing from that spot..
It is still connected and tucked away behind the dash. I do not use the light because of the camper shell.

She has cargo-light and O/D lockout switches there, side by side.

Maybe I will cut a hole, make a panel like yours, and re-install those two switches, along with a few more.
