Swap questions

Hi everybody,

Have recently revived a love for diesel motors. I am looking at getting a 91-93 cummins from local salvage yard to put into my 96 dodge2500 (gas). the guy tells me $2500 for everything but the turbo. Guaranteed to run. I may not be the smartest, but I'm thinking this is a fairly good deal. One of my questions to you all is, what should everything include? My truck is an Automatic (and 241 tcase). Should the cummins bolt up to the tranny with no adapter? Obviously I need to get the injector pump from donor truck. Should I grab the fuel pump from fuel tank as well, or just pony up the $$ for a new one.

I am not above searching for some of this myself, but was wondering if there might be a "list of necessities" in a thread for swapping older motor in newer truck. Any thread titles to search for or links to threads would be helpful, as would any suggestions. I am extremely mechanical but just not sure what to get from donor truck, and what to keep and get rid of from my pickup.

--forgot to add that I will eventually want to get a 5 spd for this truck, but it isn't in the budget for the next several months.

Thanks
Theron

price is not to bad, but finding a wrecked 94 - 97 might be your best bet. i swaped a cummins into my 98 v10 this way, and wasnt to bad,... your trans will not bolt up or have the the correct shift points. there is also all the little things though that add up like intercooler and piping, battery mounting, engine mounts, radiator, wiring and computer which you will need to keep your stock gagues and to keep the engine light off. 94 -97 stuff is all pretty much a bolt on, and would be a lot eaiser than trying to adapt the first gen 91 -93, hope this helps...

If you will keep your nose to the ground, you can find a rough-looking complete Cummins truck for about the same money and everything you need will be on that truck, even the 5-speed; then, it is just a matter of swapping parts.

I would be skeptical of an engine selling minus the turbo, unless it was dirt cheap.

You can start and run a 1st Gen. engine sitting propped-up on the ground and I would definitely start and run it before reaching for my money.

Way good advice. I paid $1200 for my donor truck. It was ugly and beat up outside, but had a new NV4500 transmission and all of the little parts that will kill you when you have to run to the parts house or dealer to finish your swap.

$2500 is way too high if the turbo is not included.

Yeah, after I got to thinking about the price, I realized that is what some 1st gen trucks are selling on here for.

DodgeTrucker: you put a newer 12 valve on yours, or you put an older motor in your 98?

Thanks for the input.
