Ram gasser engine swap questions
Ram gasser engine swap questions
I know its not a cummins question, but since my CTD runs so good, there is no need to swap anything
Here's what i want to do:
Put a later model engine in my mid-'80s ramcharger (ramcharger frame, '78 2wd pick-up cab).
Here's what i have for engines:
-1989 or so 318, throttle body, have entire wire harness and computer, i know it runs
-1987ish 360, carbed, been told it runs, but have no idea, is complete minus the dist. cap, coil, and a few things taken off to make the 318 above run.
-I bought both these engines with trucks from the same guy, both trucks were driven to where they were parked when i bought them. One i drove home (318), one i towed (360) as it was not complete. Both engines have under 80K.
-Then i bought this ramcharger thing b/c the price was right, but it had no motor. The trans is there (727 i believe), and was told it used to run and move great till they pulled the engine for another project...blah..blah...blah
So here's my problem...The '78 cab has no where near the provisions necessary for all the electrical junk that comes with 318 and was in the truck it came out of. In fact, the '78 cab has no ignition key, so i can't even use the regualr ignition to start it. I wanted to use the 318 since i know it is capable of running, but am open to any options that may arise.
Questions:
-What is involved with converting the 318 from TB to carbed...can i use parts off the carbed 360?
-If i use the 318 as is, how do i end up controlling all the electrical functions that are needed to run the TB? I can rig switches to spin the starter, but after that, electrical stuff scares me.
-I I still have the cabs of the trucks that both engines came out of

Why not use the 318 TBI and steal the electronics from the 318 cab?
Milage vs. power 360 is better for power 318 is better for milage. You might even be able to steal the steering column with ignition switch from the 318 cab to solve your ignition problem.
