Unhappy Slipping Clutch

The time has finally came, and my clutch has had enough. It slips pretty good now, so I will be replacing it this week. My question is will a clutch from a 5 speed out of the newer trucks bolt up to ours? I understand we have the 13in. flywheel, but someone told me our clutch is 12 1/4". I by no means want a stock 2nd gen clutch, but was wondering if the aftermarket pieces for the 2nd gens fit the 1st gens too? I was just wanting to verify with some of you that have might of upgraded clutches in the past and look at all of my options before I make a purchase.
Thanks,
Cody

I know a stock 2nd gen clutch will bolt to our flywheel, and the splines from the tranny are the same. We put a 2nd gen clutch in my dads 1st gen, it was cheaper, and lighter, a stamped steel pressure plate instead of a cast iron. His truck is stock though so I wasn't worried about it slipping or anything.

I can't imagine why an aftermarket clutch would not work.

I can tell you ours is 13", 2nd gen is 12 1/4", some have said our stock clutch will hold more than the 2nd gen as far as torque. Also when folks swap in a 4500 in a 1st gen, they don't have to change out the clutch if that says anything.

The 2nd gen clutch is a bolt in, you just need shorter pressure plate bolts because the 1st gen cover is cast iron and 2nd gen is stamped steel. My South Bend Con-O (same part # for '89-03 5 speed) is holding up just dandy.

The clutch kit we got from Car quest came with new shorter bolts.

KTA -- that infamous deisel hot-rodder from KY, who does not post on this site, uses an inexpensive clutch combo that is good for 1000 lb feet. If I have to replace my clutch, I'll be sure to send him an e-mail:

Yeah, Brian made his own clutch, but I dont think he's going to market them. Wannadiesel answered my question in full. Thank you! I'll be slapping my wallet and ordering a clutch tonight....thanks again.

That clutch would be a nightmare in traffic or backing a trailer. For a truck that's a toy and needs the holding power, it's a great setup. If you don't need the holding power, stick with an organic clutch like a Con-O. Smooth engagement that holds 900 ft# is worth $150 extra.

I installed a southbend "ralley clutch in mine. cost is $375. Its good to 400 HP according to Peter at southbend. It has worked like a champ for 2 years. My truck weighs over 10,000 LBs all the time. I dynoed 332 HP to the rear tires last fall.
My other 1992 Dodge Cummins just got a ralley clutch 2 weeks ago. by the way, Im not easy on a clutch, ask all the ricers in this town

For those of you who have changed to the 12 1/4 inch clutch, have you noticed any difference in shifting with the lighter clutch. Is it easier, or faster. And by the way if your looking for a sachs clutch, stock replacement there was a guy on e bay selling the 13 inch Sachs for around $400 bucks.

I was hoping for a little faster shifting, but it hasn't happened. The clutch disc really isn't much different, it's the pressure plate that's a lot lighter. Trouble is, the disc is what affects shift speed.

The thing that helped shifting in my truck was switching to Redline MTL in the trans.

Wouln't the lighter pressure plate help the engine rev up faster, and maybe better fuel mileage? Less rotating mass and everything,

You'd think it would, but it doesn't (not so you'd notice, anyway). With the weight of the crank, rods, flywheel, and tranny gears it's spit in the ocean. Everything's so stinkin' heavy, and the lighter clutch cover only takes off about 10 pounds. Not even 10%.

Thats true, I would bet that everything else the same there would be a difference on a good dyno, but like you said with everything else in there you can't notice.
