Shifter removal

I need to remove the shifter from the top cover on the getrag but there is a ring that will not come off or I don't know how to pull it. There was a snap ring holding it and I got that one but the ring around the shifter doesn't come off yet, anyone know how to pull it?

Thank You.

This would be a generic [ most manuals ] that I have taken apart .
Put down word pressure on the top have / socket [ under spring pressure ] , one down about 1/4" , turn counter clock wise to disengage 2 pins on either side .

I don't know if I got it right but the pins You mean the two screws on either side of the shifter? I got those two out already. You mean after this put pressure on the ring and turn it right.

After I loosened the screws on each side and pulled the snapring off, the whole thing jumped right out. Do you have something wrong with the internal parts of your top cover? Did you put it in wrong, and cannot get it back out? When you put it back in, use a snapwring pliers with a 45 degree angle. It is a pain. You need to use downward pressure as you work the snap ring back in there. I had to start over several times. When the ring flies off the pliers, it can go pretty far!

installing it is easy if You have a press and some imagination or someone holding it down until You push the snap ring far enough. A tranny shop removed it and they used a air hammer to do so I believe and punched the heck out of the hole top cover leaving lots of marks then told Me it needed to e replaced so I took it to My house did the entire rebuild and found put they put the thing with the forks moved so I need to re align the forks and seems like they wont move unless I remove the shifter and then put it back the right way.

You pulled the snap ring out right?
The ones I have dealt with get a ridge right above the snap ring groove, and you kinda have to yank and jerk to get it out. On the '89 it was really stubborn. That was with the trans still in. You might have to bolt the cover back to the tranny to hold it, and yank it out.
Or maybe smooth out the ridge and then it should pull out.

The scews don't have to be removed.
